RL 17 in .338-06 AI for Barnes AI 185 gr.

I am sure it is a long shot, but has anyone had experience loading the Barnes 185 TTSX in a .338-06 AI or A Square with RL 17. I have a a couple of decent loads using BLC2 and RL 15, but reading I see where a lot of folks are getting better vel. using RL 17 in heavier bullet applications, but no one has written anything about using that powder for the 185 gr. Barns, see some for 210, just not the lighter bullet...

Well at least to respond so you don't feel no one cares!

I think 185 would be good, R-17 seems to like over 168 and I am playing with 168s as well.

I like the powder a lot and have got some good results with it.

I am not pushing it as I am just target shooting at 100 yards. I have played with some loads up in max for the 300 meter range and the hoped for 1000 yard range some day.

I read lots of good things about the powder, gaining a little fps over others, but all the data I can find if for 210 or heavier.

So far I am liking my rifle, a lot.

I don't have my books handy, will check tonight.

R-17 seems to do better or as good with lighter bullets, but I am shooting 06/308 and 7.5 Swiss.

Hornady starts listing R-17 for the 308 at 168 grains.

But we get into the changes when you go up cartridge sizes so I need to look that up.

I have the Hornady 10 so it has very up to date loads and bullets.

I looked at both my Hornady (9 and 10) as they were an early adaptor of R17

There are no R17 listed nor are there 4350, even going back to 9 for the 185.

It seems this may not be suitable for that combo.

You are welcome. I was surprised. Its seems like a good powder but so did 4350.

I use it a lot. R-15 seems to be a good one for that gun.

The Firing Line has a guy who will run quick load program. Sometimes it comes up with a powder that is a really bad choice.

Fill, burn rate, case size and length all have funny factors .

not sure if this may help. My quickload didn't offer a 338-06AI so I just looked at the difference of the 30-06 and it's AI counterpart which showed 1.8gr difference so I added that into the case capacity. looks like it "may" work reason being is quickload never perfected RL17 in my opinion as I have always been able to fit more powder and get more velocity than what QL shows. a little trick you can try and partially seat a bullet and put the case over something that vibrates to settle down the powder without spilling then finish seating. QL is usually pretty spot on with other powders but for me RL17 and lil gun have been off. in a safe way that is. as always use this data at your own risk. start low and work up looking for pressure.
