Building a 25 WSSM on a Savage action?

It will probably never happen, but IF I were going to build a WSSM on a short action Savage what would I need to buy? I want a heavy barrel varmint type rifle, so I need a barrel, what else?

I've heard the super short magnums have had feeding issues, anyone got experience with that?

I've been kicking the idea of a long range 25 calliber around for sometime, my first choice is a 257 Roberts AI, which I suspect will be a lot cheaper and easier...

257 WSM is an easy swap on a WSM action. All you need is a barrel, some 270 WSM brass and some dies. Cant speak for the double SM though and really see no advantage in it over a 25-06. My 257WSM beats my 25-06's by 3 or 4 hundred FPS.

if you want a wssm or wsm start with a wsm action and it will be the easiest. I have had customer build a few 358 wssm's and they work great on wsm actions.

Re: Building a 25 WSSM on a Savage action?

I almost built a savage 6.5 wssm myself and had everything done including a barrel built but I lost interest
    and sold it.

At the time I had a 25 WSSM AR15 and the brass is way too hard and thick for me to deal with.
The brass is so hard there are no pressure signs at all until the primer falls out or the action locks.
    Very thick necks too.

That said if you want to go for either a 25WSM or 25WSSM all you need is a centerfeed action, magnum bolt head,
Magnum firing pin, and if a WSSM you probably want to use a 223 baffle.

There are other rounds I would consider before a 25 WSSM.

What sort of critters are you hunting ??

Agreed. My 223 WSSM was a Savage model 10 WSM action, and I never had feeding issues with it. You'd just need the bbl and the ability to set headspace. My 25 WSSM is a factory gun, and the only time it will ever balk at feeding is if I'm loading a short bullet (like a Horn 75 HP (not V-Max)) to a very short COAL. Otherwise, no issues at all.

I been looking into a 358wssm or 358IDC i think they are one in the same.Since I live in Indiana this is legal to use for deer hunting. Looks interesting.

its basicly the same, the neck of the IDC is short enough to make it legal. I have the reamer for the 358 IDC

bought my rifle from buds guns for 425.00 and just changed the barrel. with 51 grains of blc-2 and a 225 grain sierra game king it will shoot 3 shots under an inch. load runs 2450 fps. brass and dies can be had from fireball at bfg design.

I see there are shops here in Indiana selling Stevens 200's chambered in 358 IDC.

So one could be built on a small shank action I take it as far as being safe? Is feeding a problem?

Its perfectly fine to build on a small shank.

If a 473 bolt face you just need to change the bolt head and firing pin.

Works fine on a model 16 WSM action, I had a 25WSSM barrel on for around a year, now I have a 6.5WSSM barrel on it.

    Feeds fine, no worries.

Sounds good,I just didn't want to have to buy something that would only be used one week a year. Will probably wait as i seen the Dnr proposed a case length change from 1.625 to up to 1.800 I think,we'll see.
