I picked up the Cabela 12FV in .223 during the last sale. And may I say, actually buying the gun from there was the worst gun buying experience I have ever encountered. It took over an hour to pickup the rifle and check out. It was the most laborious check/confirm/recheck/confirm/manager approval/check/more manager approval.... They really need to get their process down.
But the rifle itself, loving it. I was really having a hard time on deciding what stock to get. And then I found a "blemished" Bell and Carlson on sale at Midway for $50 less than normal. I have been over it and can't tell just what the blemish is supposed to be. Maybe it was the lack of an instruction manual? The 12FV hardware all transferred over beautifully, except for the blind magazine locking tab. I had to file down the tab that fits over the rear action screw....it was a bit too wide for the channel in the stock. I may still at least bed the lug as there is some fore/aft movement when you lay the action in the stock. For all I know the lug is snugged back against the aluminum bedding block when the screws are torqued down, but who knows. And I love the jeweled bolt...great look on an otherwise all black rifle.
I grabbed a Nikon 4.5-14 scope off another rifle until I get something dedicated for this build and took it to the range. Obviously with the weight of the barrel and the B&C stock it's a very soft shooter. Using some Defender 69gr SMK and Fiocchi 50 gr V-Max ammo I was able to get several sub .6" 5 shot groups.

Very nice... Yeah, Cabela's can be a PITA at times, but most of the time their sale prices make it worthwile.
Congrats on rifle & new stock. Looks good. The groups should get smaller with some hand loads.
I had a very similar buying experience. Originally want it in a 22-250 but it was on perpetual back order so I got them to switch it to the .223. Glad I did cause this thing shoots incredibly well. I put mine in a Boyd's thumbhole stock and put a Burris MTAC 4.5-14X42 scope with some nice Warne rings and base.

SWFA 12x42 SS scope came in today. Took some measurements and ordered some Talley 30mm Low (.400") 1 piece rings. Also have a Seekins Precision SRS Picatinny rail coming so I can have a low profile way to mount my bipod. I really wish I had the space to start a reloading operation...but the wife would kill me :-)
I also had the same experience at Cabelas but was happy with my Sav-12FV 308 and also purchased B&C A-2 and found the mag tab too wide so I filed the aluminum block a little till the tab went in very tight,aside from that everything fit like a glove.I have a Millett Trs-1 on it from another rifle and looking forward to going on to the desert with it..
Glad to hear you like the rifle. I ordered one on Cabelas website and I'm going to pick it up tomorrow. I will let you know how much pain I have to endure in the transfer process. I have 3 savage rifles already and love them.
My take is Cabella has established a pretty rigid set of guidelines to ensure they don't get one into the wild.
Big egg on their face and fines if they do. I just go in completely relaxed, take a book or magazine and works good.
On the other hand when they messed up some stuff they made it good.
MY 12FV is in a Thumbhole stock now with a Lothar Walther stainless barrel on it and oddly, Cabella AK Guide scope (no longer offered) as my eyes have a fondness for the cross hairs. One in 12 x and the other in 20. Good 100 yard and 200 yard target, ok at 300.
Scope and pic rail are now mounted. It looks like that if I really wanted to I could have gone with the Extra Low (.300") Talley mounts, but I would have to push the scope back far enough so the focus knob would clear both the scope mount and the bolt handle. The bolt handle itself seems like it would still have enough clearance as well.

I love the look and functionality of the SRS rail. It really hugs the stock tight and gets the bipod as close as possible. The only problem is the 4 included mounting screws are all the same length, and too short to boot. I am using the sling screws for now and just snugged then in with a small screwdriver.

Same here, got a Savage FV 22-250 for dirt cheap at Cabela's...now converting it to be a medium long range Varminter and fun target puncher...Choate tactical stock, Choate adjustable but stock plate, tactical SS bolthandle, cheek riser, CVU bypod....
Cant wait to put it all together....shot 1/4 groups with Hornady 50 accu tips factory ammo...maybe it gets even a bit better....I will report back soon.!!!!Originally Posted by celltech
I saw the Choate stocks when I was considering what to get, but I never could figure out just what they are made of. It looks to me like it's some sort of very dense plastic??? I found a lot of "heavy as hell" type comments.
So can someone describe the construction, I might consider it for a later build...
