Not enough info! What model is it?? Post a picture! If it's an old 99, the caliber is stamped on top of the barrel in front of the receiver.
I recently inherited a Savage rifle, I haven't been able to find anything but the serial number. Can anyone point me in the direction to find what I have here?

Another drive buy!!??
Sorry Al I don't have a pic but the serial # is F848960
Like I said, it's hard to determine without knowing what model it is. Is it a lever gun, bolt action?? The ser# alone will not give that info, that may tell you what year it was made! My next suggestion is take It to a gun smith and have him ID it and if needed, do a chamber cast to determine the caliber.
It was made in 2000, definitely not a 99.
Might wanna try one of the other boards here, the vintage section isn't really a place for this rifle and I'm sure the bolt guys can figure out what cal it is.
Savage- "never say never".
If you believe it is a centerfire rifle look at these and see if it is similar to any of them.
There are several pages so make sure you look at them all.

The Dunning-Kruger effect is alive and well.
Caliber/cartridge will be stamped on the left side of the barrel if it's a factory barrel. If it's not a factory barrel and there are no markings on the barrel you will need to do a casting of the chamber to determine what it's chambered for. Any gunsmith can do this for you.

I can easily tell you what motor is in your car by looking at it. But no way in hell could I ever tell you what your rifle is chambered for by just looking at it.
just kidding.
Unfortunately there is no way we can tell the chambering with the serial #. Even SavageArms probably will not know through the serial number... sorry.
Chamber cast is best... A gunsmith or a home hobby gunsmith can do this easily. Cerrosafe can be purchased from many places like brownells or midwayusa.
If the barrel was replaced, the "chambering" roll mark might be on the bottom of the barrel. You would have to remove the stock and check.
