.17-223 will be every bit as fun and a lot more juice. Explosive on small varmints, it is super flat out to about 250 and there is zero recoil. Tall grass and rain will vaporize the little bullets though and they are a pain in the butt to reload. We use tweezers to keep the bullets straight.

Rimmed cartridges extract differently, the barrel needs to have an extractor groove in most cases, which means its timed, and controlled round feed is the usual bolt face implementation.

    You want a CZ 527.

the savage bolt face is also recessed and the web on the hornet wasn't designed to be that far from support and can fail or have even shorter case life.

there's always the .221 fireball or even shorter yet the 22tcm. both of these however will require you to remove the ejector and you have to pluck off each case. so if a repeater was what your after the savage isn't the greatest platform for the short cartridges. sako makes a small action as well as the cz527 listed above. then there's rock islands 22tcm rifle. only problem there is your confined to mag length restrictions that don't permit alot of bullet chioces.

I have a 22 hornet sized wildcat and I will say it can be a little troublesome with feeding with certain bullets. but it's performance to cost ratio is very impressive. it's called the .223 short, formed from .223 cases, no neck turning, it will drive a 40gr vmax to 3260ft/sec with a mere 13.5gr of lil gun from a 18" barrel no less. report is very mild.

ETA: then again didn't savage release a model 25 in 17 hornady hornet? if so that would be as simple as a re-barrel.

second edit. they already chamber the model 25 in 22 hornet

PTG makes a Hornet bolt head for the Savage 10-16, but I don't see any mention of how they do extraction/ejection or what additional parts are needed, plus magazine info for Hornet.

If you want a Hornet go CZ 527 and don't look back. 3 times the rifle a mod 25 is at a very modest street price increase. Fantastic factory set trigger.
