I must have chosen an unpopular topic. Hello anyway.
Hi I am new to this forum. Just ordered a Savage 17hmr FVSS for plinking, teaching, varmints, and target. It is not so easy to find debate on 17hmr vs. 22wmr anywhere. Just took a deep breath and ordered the 17hmr. Did I make a good choice for the above uses?

I think you've made a good choice. I have a FVSS 22WMR. I regret not getting the 17 HMR, I think it's a better round for target shooting.
One thing about the FVSS is that the stock is pretty flimsy. I replace it with a Boyd's Tactical stock and love it.

I had 3 savages in 17hmr, a btvs (which I still have), and a classic and a gv (which I have sold) and all were excellent shooters. Midsouth Shooters Supply has hornady vmax for 9.99, which all my 17s have liked. The winchester vmax shoots best through my btvs, but is almost twice as much and harder to find around here in middle tn. I tried the 20gr, but had feeding problems with my magazines and it was not as accurate or consistent as the 17gr vmax. Hornady also has a 15.5gr NTX out, but I have yet to try it.
Definitely upgrade the stock.
my btvs with upgraded stock (scope has since been upgraded also), and the gv which has been gone for some time
