Savage 10 FCP-SR LEFT HAND???

Hi,
I'm looking at this rifle in left hand.

I see reports that it was changed has crummy bottom metal...

A not so nice stock,ect. ect.???

Can someone tell me what is going on with this rifle?

Looking for a left hand 308 with a heavy barrel?

Stock is not that important as it will be replaced!!!

Crummy bottom metal? No, it just doesn't use the Accurate Mag bottom metal or AICS mags anymore that many would prefer. It's the same bottom metal found on the premium Savage models like the Weather Warriors or American Classics and uses Savage's proprietary 10rd (9 actually) magazine.

Not so nice stock? Well, compared to what? Yeah it's pretty lousy compared to say a McMillan or Manners stock, but the AccuStock is a far cry better than the basic synthetic stock that comes on the package rifles. It's perfectly serviceable, but if you want top of the line you're not going to find it at the 10 FCP-SR's price point.

The 10 FLCP-SR is pretty much the only left-hand heavy barrel option left from Savage these days so it's not like you have a lot of other options to choose from other than building a custom.

Is the system reliable?

I guess, I could buy the rifle, to get the LH Action, barrel and trigger and change out the stock!

If I went one of the metal stocks that would get me the bottom metal and adjustability!

I haven't had any issues with the mag. Once you figure out how to insert it correctly and make sure you open the bolt all the way you are good to go. I have a flush fit 4 round for mine that will be used for hunting and shooting 90% of the time anyways. As far as the accuracy goes, it is the most accurate stock rifle i have ever shot hands down. As far as I'm concerned, there isn't a **** thing wrong with the accustock for hunting. If you are going to target shoot, i would probably switch it out though.

Yes, it comes with AI compatible bottom metal. Its a MDT LSS XL chassis, with Magpul PRS Stock, Burris XTR II 5-25X50 scope and now has a Fat Bastard Gen II muzzle brake.

Shoots pretty nice too. Here's a more recent pic with muzzle brake

I love the PRS stock!

I have it on all my AR15/AR10 type rifles!!!

I was looking at the MDT HS3 stock with the PRS!

You really have to sit down and think about these aluminum machined stocks.....

If you factor in no need to glass bed (nothing heavy anyway!)....

And the included bottom metal that takes the proven AI Mags....

The price really isn't that bad????

If you have a paid membership you can load pics right from your computer. Took me 2 min to drop my action into the chassis, two screws torqued to 65 inch pounds and done. The only problem with MDT is limited on color for lefties. That PRS I barrowed off my AR-15 until my PRS Gen iii came in.

I have a lathe and a Bridgeport Mill and can machine a little, but...

IF the rifle will shoot around 1/2" groups, I probably would not mess with it....

Until I burnt the barrel up, anyway!!!

Saw this!

There are many good CF

rifles out there. Some of the major gun company's have been taking shortcuts lately on their CF rifles, which I find unfortunate such as going from Button rifled barels to hammer forged rife barrels and making the trigger so you can no longer adjust them for a decent pull.

What I just found out was that Savage upgraded all their CNC machines at the time they went to the Accu Stock.
I used to be a gunsmith and specialized in accurizing Savage rifles. I retired about 5 years ago.

When blue printing the actions, I would have to remove a fair amount of metal sometimes and always had to remove more metal than I felt I should have had to on a quality riflesuch as the Savage to get everything perfectly in line.

Since the new equipment, the fit of the parts is 5 times better than it was before. When accurizing a Savage action, very little to no metal in some cases needs to be removed.

A good example is the bolt face. I always had to turn a little off of the bolt face to make it parellel, now, they are so good, if you find one that is not parellel, you might just as well throw it away and get another, they are that good. Same with the face of the action. A little metal still needs to be removed, but but many required up to 10 thousanths or moreneeded to be removed, not any more.

The way to tell if you have one of the actions manufactured on the new equipment is to look at the bottom of the tang. It will have a number on it different than the serial number.

The reason for for is that Savage now puts the info into from every rifle into a computer and it keeps track of how many parts have been cut with a particular cutter. When it reaches the number of cuts that the cutter in a certian machine gets to, the cutter is replaced. That way there are no dull cutters to make a less than perfect part. A very good idea as many manufacturers let their cutters cut too many parts and that's where they run into trouble with parts that are out of spec. It costs Savage more to do it this way, but they end up with far fewer returned rifles and the accuracy is greatly increased

This new system insures that every part is as perfect as it can be.

What this adds up to is that you get one of the most accurate production rifles available. This combined with the Accu Stock and Accu trigger is why their guns shoot sub MOA right out of the box with good ammo and others do not.

A couple of other things, if you are going to build a custom barreled Savage and want the thickest barrel, get the action that has duel windows in it, it has the thickest barrelshank of any Savage rifle.

Don't have the money for a Savage, get a Stevens. No Accu trigger or Accu stock, but the same great manufacturing and they shoot great.

If you are going to build a custom barreled rifle, the cheapest way is to buy a Stevensrifle, have a quality barrel put on and a new trigger. It will cost less than starting out with a Savage and will shoot just as good.
As you are most likely going to replace the stock, the cost savings runs into the hundreds of dollars.

I found it very interesting and thought I'd pass it on as it could save you some money or at least get you a rifle that is a real shooter right out of the box.

Yes there are other good riles, but give the Savage a good look. Most people did not know, me included that Savage has gone to such great lengths to produce the finest mass produced rifle out there. In many cases, they outshoot the $2500. to $5000.00 custom rifles you see offered.

Please don't make this into a this rifle is better type post. I did it for people thinking about buying a Savage so they know what they are getting and for those thinking about what brand of rifle to buy.
If you love your Rem or Win rifle, I'm not telling you to dump it, many shoot very well.
