Are those gouges in the rifling?
Are those gouges in the rifling?
Those groove and lands are nasty! Looks like it would definitely upset the jacket of the bullet, maybe tear it up pretty good. Some pitting is not nearly as bad. Savage owes you a good barrel.
I'd say that looks pretty rough! Hopefully Savage can take care of you.
Yes, that barrel is junk!
just curious....how good, or bad, wil it shoot?
A 1 1/2" group at 100 was a good group for it, only shot one 1" group. With 130gr Burgers the bullets didn't hit the target square, like they weren't stable. Also it showed pressure signs two grains from book max.
That just a normal looking Savage barrel!
Off kilter bullets, yea that gets over the edge.
If it was just pressure I would check the other signs but the summation of the issues in total says its a problem.
Have the days of buying a Savage and expecting decent accuracy past?
7 come 11 for a decent barrel?
Is the only reason to buy one now is for the action, so you can replace the barrel with a high zoot custom?
Please let us know if they make this right justin61.
This rifle has never shot well, regardless of what I fed it. I have two savage rifles that shoot great, so after my shoulder surgery I was looking for something with less recoil than my old mdl 70 in 30-06 and thought this would fit the bill. It does fit in the recoil department but the accuracy, not so much.
I have to find another place to ship it as my local ups shipper wont ship firearms.
Have you tried USPS?
I ship all the long guns that way.
Yes I called them today, UPS was about 8-$10 cheaper and from my experience their tracking system is much more reliable. It will go out this afternoon and Savage will have it Monday.
Quick update. I called Savage today, they have replaced my barrel at no cost to me, the rifle is currently ready to test. Once that's finished they will roll stamp the barrel and ship it back.
IMO this is what customer service should be.
Hope It shoots as good as customer service is.
