25-20 savage shorter load dara

Hello everyone,

I have a savage sporter in 25-20 and rely can't find any load data. I am using unique under 87gr. Rn now and accuracy leaves a little to be desired, any load data would be helpful to get this rifle shooting good for my kids many thanks.

when I get home i'll try and remember to check one of my old speer books. I has a few. is the 87gr jacketed or lead?

use small pistol primers as they have better consistency in smaller cases like that.

Small cartridges like the 22 Hornet, 218 Bee and the 25-20 can really do well with Hodgdon's Lil'Gun powder. I use 11.7 gr of it with a 75 gr. bullet and Rem 6-1/2 primers. Very consistent and no pressure problems. Works so well I've never been interested in trying small pistol primers with any of these.

Lil'Gun is a good choice. Also 4227. Unique is too fast for jacketed bullets. Some of our ASSRA club shooters are using AA4100 and/or Ramshot Enforcer (same powder, different can), but that's with heavy cast bullets. Accuracy they get at 200 yards off the bench will astound you. Can't quote you charge weights, but I'd start at 8.5 grains with your typical 75 to 86 grain jacketed.

checked my books and none even list a 87gr bullet. however I would absolutely not try 8.5gr of unique in the case DO NOT PLEASE! book max for h110 with a 75gr is 8.5gr and thats a lighter bullet and slower powder.

I would try around 4-5gr tops of unique(this is based off quickload with a 87gr speer softpoint). I would also reccomend going lead as it will generate less pressure and be more suitable with unique. maybe even go lighter like a 75gr bullet. that or go with slower powders like H110/W296, lil gun, aa1680, IMR 4227, ect....

with 5gr unique with the speer 87sp it show 38k psi and 1640ft/sec from a 20" barrel. this will put alot of stress on your hard to replace brass.
for example you could get the same velocity with 8.1gr of lil gun at 19k psi. this will help keep brass life up.

alternatively you could go with a 67gr cast with 4.5gr unique at the same 19k psi you'll get the same 1640 ft/sec and good brass life.

For the 86gr Rem FP, my best load is 9.5gr IMR4227.

For the small .25 calibers, lead is best. The commercial .25 caliber bullets available today are all designed for the higher velocities attainable from cartridges like 250-3000 and .25-06. They don't expand worth a hoot at .25-20 velocity. I know. Made that mistake when I took up the old .25-20 Single Shot many years ago. A great mid-range woodchuck rifle, but jacketed bullets didn't kill clean unless you got a good head or spine hit. Got a mould for an 85 grain flat-point bullet. They rarely made their holes after that. You can buy them. Popular for Cowboy Action shooting. Not too hard - they should be around Brinnel 10, no harder.
