Savage 10 FCP-SR (good review for a change)

So after reading what seemed like a million negative comments about the "new" Savage 10 FCP-SR with loose threads at the muzzle, a crappy 10 round mag that falls out and won't feed, new designed accustock that has terrible bedding, accuracy worse than a shotgun, chambers that were cut wrong, and just a general crappy build quality.

I bought one...

Now that I've had a chance to really get to know this rifle I am left thinking, am I just really lucky or is a lot of the negativity I read just BS? Who knows...

So here's my take on this rifle.

Mine is the 24" barrel model chambered in .308 win.



I took off the EGW 0 MOA rail and put on a Weaver 20 MOA rail, and a Bushnell Elite Tactical 6-24x50 30mm tube scope. Drilled the stock and mounted an adjustable check riser, and mounted a 6-9" bipod.






I went over the whole rifle straight out of the box, cleaned out the barrel, adjusted the accutriger to the lowest it would go (2 1/4 pounds), oiled it up, and torqued the action screws to 40 inch pounds.

The overall build quality is fantastic, fit and finish is great. The threads on the barrel are perfect, the thread protector threads on nice and tight with no slop in the threads at all. Finger tight and after a couple hundred rounds fired it hasn't budged. The 10 round magazine is more like a 9 round mag. I can put 10 rounds in it but it's tight and then difficult to get the mag in the rifle. Load 9 and there's no problems. So that is the one and only negative I can give this rifle. The magazine has to be inserted properly so it doesn't fall out. Put the back in first then rock the front up and in, give it a firm tug to ensure its in and you're good to go. It will not fall out of it's installed properly. All rounds fed flawlessly from the mag and spent cases ejected perfect.




Accuracy was amazing for a factory rifle, I tried what I had on hand which was just factory hunting ammunition. Remington core lokt 150 grain soft point, Federal 150 grain soft point, Nosler 165 grain accubond, and good old Chinese surplus 7.62x51 fmj.
I got multiple sub half MOA groups with the Federal, Nosler, and Remington with many bullets going through the same hole. Worst groups were around 1 MOA. Best group was about .3 MOA. This thing is an absolute lazer beam if I can just keep it together long enough to not pull a shot and I am by no means a great shot.
The Chinese 7.62x51 shot very well for what it is, averaging 1.5 MOA.

I can only imagine how good this thing would shoot with good ammunition, and hand loading would have to be very impressive.

All in all I highly recommend this rifle, for the price of this rifle I was not expecting the results I got. I have many more expensive rifles that shoot worse than this Savage, and that speaks volumes.

I have a Savage model 10T (Cabela version of the 10 FCP-SR) in 308 and I love it ... I agree with your review 110%.

The only issue I had was with the Magazine ... but I rarely put more than 6 rounds in at a time.

Eats 168 Gr Hornady like a Champ

Still gotta find the funds to put a scope on mine. Initial review is that was on par with all the Savage rifles I've owned, except the rim fires.

I just acquired one myself and I was pretty happy with my first outting. It would appear it likes 168gr better but I'm going to try a few more.

Well, these are handloads. I did not attempt it with any factory ammo. I also tried some SMK 175gr with VV N140 but it seemed to hang closer to 1.5 MOA at 120, this could have been the shooter (me). The Zmax really surprised me, especially over WC844.

bought the same rifle, and it shot bug holes with Hornady Whitetail 150's, Haven't had an opportunity to handload for it yet.

Latest outing with 168 grain bullets came in at an average of .97 MOA @ 120 yards over 6 targets. I'm happy.

I have been shooting one for a couple years. I absolutely love it. I did not get the accuracy you have right out of the box. Maybe it took a while for my skills to improve or maybe it took a while to break in. I had a very similar cheek riser for a while but I still found the rifle uncomfortable for prone shooting. I switched to a boyd pro varmint with a logger head riser. Accuracy got even better. It is a consistent .5 moa gun now.
