    New short action build

Ok, so I took the advise from you guys. I'm selling my 270 WSM 16 weather warrior to build a new rifle on a 4.40" based short action to fit my stock. I'm planning to go with a 270 WSM build since I already invested in bullets, dies powder, and primers... a few hundred dollars worth. Anyway, I have a few more questions now that I have the action and stock set.

I will need a new bolt head. I was going to go with PTG for a magnum bolt head and the SSS extractor. Will this combination work? The bolt head on my current rifle looks nothing like the picture on the PTG website, but they say it's a drop-in.

Next, I'm going to go with an X-Caliber barrel blank in 270. Any issues with X-Caliber I should know about? I can get a Shilen for the same price, but the X-Caliber has 5R rifling and Shilen doesn't. X-Caliber also doesn't have the wait. I have a buddy just getting started as a smithing business who said he would do my action and build a barrel for $100.

I will be getting a nut and recoil lug from NSS.

    Anything I'm missing?

I've got a 20 MOA Leupold Mark 4 rail and a Steiner T5i 5-25x56 scope in a Larue mount waiting for some action! Plan on using this rifle for everything the PNW has to offer (bear, elk, deer, etc...I'll probably never draw for moose).

What is the purpose of this rifle?

A little bit of precision shooting and a lot of hunting. Where I live a 500 yard shot on an animal is not unlikely. I also like having the confidence that I know my gun is capable of putting a bullet of exactly where I want it to go.

and why are you replacing the factory bolt head? IMHO, PTG offers nothing better than the factory's, just a higher price tag.

Where is it that 500 yd shots are likely? There is one thing a PTG bolthead can do. You can move the wave washer between the baffle and the B.H. so the baffle does not wipe the lube off as fast.

PTG bolt head is because the new action doesn't have a magnum bolt head which I need for a WSM. Also meant to say 400 not 500. I live in south western Washington. It happens. I also hunt in Oregon for elk where 350-400 has been typical for us in the past.

I have an XC barrel. I would call it in between the Savage OEM and a Shilen.

It shoots fine, equal with the Shilen. The interior finish is not as good as the Shilen so its a bit harder to clean (finish inside does not affect how it shoots, just how well it cleans up)

If you want it sooner, then its a good barrel. If I was not in a hurry I would go with the Shilen, I don't like spending any more time than necessary to clean.

I would be interested in CB for the next barrel if they had the configuration I wanted. they have jumped in and offered to take one back, virtually insisted on it when they saw it reported on the site and I like that.

Ok I looked at them. I have heard good things too. The don't offer blanks, only pre-fits. I went and ordered a shield blank since I have a deal going with my buddy who is trying to get his name out in the area.

We don't actively advertise our barrel blanks, but over the past couple years we have been stockpiling quite a few different variations. If you're interested in one, feel free to give us a call and we'll put a quote together for you. Current lead times on blanks are 3-4 weeks (uncontoured) and 6-8 weeks (contoured).

Your better off with a 300 win mag. 270 wsm won't do anything but burn extra powder like a 7 mag. 300 win mag will touch anything at 1000 yards no problem with the scope your using

Ive already decided on my caliber, have a short action and a barrel. I don't doubt the capabilities of a 300WM, but this is the route I'm heading.

After working with Rebecca at Savage for nearly two weeks, she was finally able to find me a push feed short action magnum bolt head, baffle, and firing pin. $61 delivered to my door. Not a bad deal! So my next question is what is the best extractor kit available?
