Shoot a Savage .308 Free Recoil? You Betchca!

Okay, yeah...So I noticed The Savage 12 Benchrest .308 Winchester really rides the SEB Rest And SEB rear bag well, slide it back & forth, and it always goes back to the same point; as witnessd by the X hair returning to the same place every time I push the rifle forward.

So, I decide to try it 'free recoil'. W/ scope, the unloaded rifle tips the digital postal scale @ 12 lb, 8oz.
It works, WOOTZ! My shoulder is not touching the pad. Just slides back in a push, not a jab. I'll be quiet, look @ the pics.

My shoulder is about an inch away from the pad.

    UM44.....If I had Photoshop....I'd do just that.....but sadly (weeping, weeping) I don't. So....I'll just have to pretend.

Hey...just like when I post teeny tiny groups from targets. I scour the net and find 'em....then post 'em and say they are mine. But....let's just keep that between us......eh?

No excuses there Davey 'ol boy. The Windoz version of "Gimp" is FREE and will do all PS will do, so you can "design" your own tiny bughole groups as the "need" arises. ;D You can easily turn a rifle that has trouble keeping three out of five shots on a garbage can lid at 50 yards into a one holer at 1000. Its called "internet tuning"!

BTW, good looking club ya put together there NefariousD

Notice while I had you distracted some stole your possum hollow bore guide and all your brass :D

BillPA: The gun above is Ultramag's Mine is totally different (I left the tags on :D) and my scope and rail are left-overs from when I was feeling all "tactical"

BillPa: Thanks bro! The bases are Weaver (true Weaver) # 46's, Burris Signature Zee Rings, Weaver 36X scope. SEB rest, SEB Bigfoot Rear bag. Caldwell elbow bags.

    Ultramag,

In 60's terms....I dig the thumb and index finger trigger technique and have used it as well. It IS "groovy" and not that "far out" as a lot of serious bench rest shooters are really into to it as well. I do like the elbow bag as well and I will have to try that. Any little thing to improve accuracy should be "what's happening" to perpetuate the Savage accuracy image. Your doing your part to keeping them amazed. Very nice stick, nice group, great photos... righteous rest bags and form....

PS, I've been staying up nights to finish reading "California Dreaming" by Michelle Phillips which is a great detailed read for those that loved the music and the times.

    Peace... and cheaper ammo...

    Pete K. ;D

Hopefully Thursday if the weather is good. I'm gonna shoot the fire lapping rounds (50, cleaning every 10) then I'm going to shoot a pressure ladder for 4064 at 300 and maybe do some seating depth stuff before that. I need to finish my rest (bought the loaf to use on it) and table before then and hopefully I'll get the new cleaning rods I ordered by then. I ordered two 44's one for the LRPV and one for this. I'm hoping the shaft diameter on the Tipton fits the Lucas rod bushing, what is the diameter of your Tipton?

The scope is a Nightforce 8-32X56 NXS with an NP-R2 reticle and the base is a (actually the first according to Nightforce, I bought it before they shipped them to any vendors) Savage short action 20MOA one piece. Both used to reside on my 10FP before I sold it to the kid that works for me. The LRPV has the same setup but the scope is a 5.5-22X56 NXS with the same reticle.

The 110FP in .300 Win Mag has one sitting here waiting for it when Savage decides to send it back. Apparently, I like Nightforce and having an empty wallet.

NefariousD: The Tipton's shaft measures .245

The Nightforce is an awsome scope! Can you do a closeup of the mount and rings?

Waiting breathlessly for your range report!

Thank you sir! My old one was .242 but there seems to be a little play so it might work. If not I'll drill it out a bit.

As requested (the light wasn't so great and the camera hates taking pictures of black things inside at night)

    NefariousD,

You have some serious rings there too! Of course w/ the weight of the NF scope, a good move that.

For pics @ night, use a neutral backround. The pic is less 'busy', and light reflects well with a basic camera.

You can use material from a fabric store, or poster board from Hobby lobby. Experiment w/ different colors to get the right effect for the lighting or color of your subject. A photo suite like Kodak can allow you to darken / lighten a pic. Wow! I hijacked my own thread! ;D :D
