Lot's of great replies here. I like the buy a bargain Ebay, amazon, clearance etc. somewhere and shoot the hell out of it and over time stash a little coin in a dark hole. Research all the while for what you need vs what you want and come up with a compromise.

I have a Simmons 3-9X32 22 Mag scope with adjustable objective on a '69 Marlin Model 80, and I have one w/o AO on my son's MkII youth. For the money, I don't think you're going to find much better. The AO scope was under 50 bucks on sale and the non-AO was $13 shipped with a rebate.

We're only shooting these rifles 50 yards so we don't need real high end glass. We've been very happy with the Simmons for our usage.

...I'm not studied enough on sub $50 scopes to provide counsel to you, I can say that if in future your resources allow you to do, Nikon prostaff's are about the best for the buck..I know that is a subjective statement, however I own 3 of them and they have made rimfire shooting fun again..

the one model I have is most remarkable, it the PROSTAFF Target EFR (extended focus range).. I've never seen a scope quite like it. It can bring a object completely in focus down to 10 meter away. I can focus on a dandelion stalk..and hit the stalk..! Sometimes..ha..

The Vortex Crossfire II 4-12 x 40 AO was my choice. Hard to beat their VIP transferable warranty.

I use a fixed 16x SWFA. It has over 100moa of elevation adjustment.
Combined with a custom cut EGW 40moa base I can reach out 400yds with standard velocity ammo. .
