    Savage barrel re chamber

Hi, I have a stainless steel target barrel I purchased from ER Shaw several years ago, fully chambered in 260 Remington. I'm starting another project and want to have it rechambered in 6.5x55 Swede. Problem I'm having is I can,t find a smith willing to just recut the chamber. I installed it originally on a Savage action, I have a wrench, vise, gauges and can install it back on the action myself, all I need is the chamber cut as I am not wanting to do it by hand. I've finished reamed several other short chambered barrels in he past but as it will be used for long range target it should be done on a lathe. Can anyone recommend a smith that would do it. I've gotten a couple of estimates for anywhere between $275 and $350, seems aweful exspensive for just deepening a chamber, any help would be appreciated, Thanks

sell the 260 and buy a Swede. Or, trade the 260 for a Swede
The Dunning-Kruger effect is alive and well.

Fred, the issue is that the 260 is a lot straighter walled case than the Swede. The Swede is about .020 smaller at the shoulder. This means the smith may need to cut off most your chamber just to get the Swede reamer to clean up the 260 chamber. He would cut off the barrel threads and have to re-thread it. That's why they are giving estimates that are higher than the barrel is worth.

Sell the 260 and buy a Swede. Or, trade if someone is willing.

Looking at chamber prints... 6.5x55 Improved should work, but not the original 6.5x55 Swede.

Why bother changing? The .260 and the Swede have nearly identical performance. If you want more performance go to the .260 Ackley or 6.5-06 or 6.5-284.

The slight difference in performance between the 260Rem and the 6.5x55 would not be worth $275 to $350 to Me. As mentioned, You probably can't do that rechamber anyway.

I'm assuming Your having these thoughts to save time.

But If I wanted a 6.5x55 barrel, I would order one in that chamber.

The problems w3ith ides is sometimes they take a life on of their own.

As noted, with go with the 260 which is a perfectly fine cartridge , or sell the barrel and get the one you want.

It does have to say millimeter on the barrel to shoot good!
