I don't have any Savage wood stocks to look at and judge. I have a varmint contoured barrel coming and I need a cheap stock. Is there enough room to hog out on a regular savage wood stock to fit this barrel?

Ok. My options are to buy a wood stock, pillar and bed it, hog it out, and a recoil pad or get a hogue stock for about the same price.
You can get a Boyds and not have to do anything. They come channeled per your profile with a butt pad and some choices for a better one.
I have gone with Laminate though I don't think that makes any difference.
I have 2 Boyds stocks. One a Thumbhole varmint laminate and the second a classic in walnut. Both provide a very good fit and barrel contour to suit the need. Given the cost of factory or other competitors The Boyds is a great choice. I recommend them.
I have several Boyd's and may go that way. I can get regular wooden stocks for $50. This is a budget build that'll only see subsonic use.
I have two of the Boyds Laminates. One is an OEM Savage and the other is a Boyds Varmint.
Both have been great fits and have shot well from the git go.
Per Stut64 its good to know that extends to their standard wood stocks as well.
you could always take a page from axis builders and stiffen the stock and bed it . hydraulic cement or anchoring cement works well . adds weight but you can balance rifle as well and I believe you have room to open up barrel channel for barrel . you pour it in open channels inside stock . it goes in with milk shake consistency then over night it is rock solid . obviously open stock for barrel first then cement it . that's real budget building . I have two sub $ 300 sub 3/8 moa axis made like this .

I think its a waste of time. Like trying to after engineer integrity into something .
I am not going to disagree they shoot, just would go with a good solid stock (Laminated is great as its as good as composite and beyond better looking). It stands up as well or better than composite or plastic stocks. Also very light.
Low cost, pre channeled led and a better butt pad.
