best bang for the buck muzzle break?

Looking for a good break for a heavy barreled .300 win mag.

Who makes a good break for a good price?

Reduction in recoil is the primary criteria, I don't shoot prone or with other people beside me.

Purchased a nice brake from Nate. VERY effective muzzle brake on a 338 RUM running 300 gr SMK's at 2950.

The brake on the left is what is on the 338 RUM that I built.

Nate has a super brake from what I have heard. He designed it himself and it is very reasonably priced.

I have installed a number of on/off Brockman brakes and they also work very well. Darryl Hollands first brake the quick discharge is very effective. I number of these have serious noise and definitely have back blast.

The last I heard Nate wasn't taking any more work though????

For a low buck brake check out Ross Schuler, google it, should come up with a post on another forum. His brakes are Holland style and sell for about $40

Check the vendor classifieds, Sinarms is now selling brakes.

No back blast on Nate's brakes. Very effective.

The 338 RUM running 300 gr SMK's at 2950, produces 5500 ft lbs of energy, according to a couple differently ballistic calculators.

I run a 3 port Defensive Edge break on my 338 edge and am very happy with it. I have heard good things about Ross Shuler and Nate's break mentioned above. From what I have read the APA Fat Bastard my be the best right now but it is expensive.

Thanks for the replies. Haven't been able to get a hold of Nate at Straight Shot.

What about a factory break from Mcgowan etc?

Easy choice. Harrell's will sell you any diameter brake you want. Just tell them what outside diameter you want. MSRP is $30, but they have a cash price which is even better.

    +1 on both.

I've used Sin Arms to fit two Ross Schuler brakes on two 338 Edges. Great guys to deal with.

btw...Ross makes brakes in all styles. Even ones with radial holes that don't need to be timed. Perfect for switch barrel Savages.

I spoke with a friend today that has pretty much any and every brake on a number of really heavy hitting cartridges. The Fat Bast+++ brake the one he rates the highest at recoil reduction. I would trust this guy with my life so his word is golden with me. He is going to put the new 4 port Muscle brake on his current 330 Dakota the last I heard( XP build ). He has one on a 338 Norma.

I asked him to compare the muscle brake with the Fat Bast+++ overall. Fat Bast+++ more expensive somewhat better reduction in recoil. Move your head right or left a touch when firing the Fat Bast+++ and it will get your attention. Muscle brake_ No change in noise to the shooter and no back blast.

Go with the Harrell's. I've owned other barkes and found out you can spend more money for something fancy looking and cool, The Harrell brake works just fine and will not hurt your wallet. I have one on my .300 RUM and it tames it down real well. Shooting a 180's with 100 grains of Retumbo in a 700 BDL Remington, sorry. :-[ This is a somewhat lite rifle, it is comfortable to shoot.

That's almost as much powder as I put in my 17 Aclkey Bee.
The picture isn't to scale and I don't have anything that big... You're bullet is probably the same size as my 17AB case.
