    Savage 111 .300 win mag....change

I have a Savage 111 .300 win mag and a Savage Axis 30-06 (which was a gift so I feel obliged to keep it even though it doesn't "fit" fit). I was thinking about either selling the .300 win mag or swapping the barrel and bolt face to switch it out to a different caliber. I would like a .270 win, 7mm-08, .308 or a .243. The trigger, bolt and the stock are 100x better on the 111 compared to the axis. I also have had a few wrist surgeries that makes it difficult to wrap my hand around a traditional stock and take the recoil from the larger rounds. This is what I was thinking my options where and wanted to get some advice and more information from the community that deals with savages often.

    1. Change the barrel and bolt face on the .300 win mag- this seems just as costly as buying another rifle however.
    2. Put the Savage Axis 30-06 barrel on the .300 win mag and change the bolt face- I have read that this may or may not be possible due to different thread dimensions on the axis receivers?
    3. Sell the .300 win mag and use the money to put a different stock on the Axis for better LOP and ergonomics.

    Any other suggestions are welcome.

The axis has the same barrel threads as a normal savage 10/110 small shank action. If it were me I would re barrel the 111 to something you want. It's ultimately up to you though. If you can't swap barrels yourself it might just be better to buy a new rifle.

I would keep the Savage 111 action and use that as a platform to build on. There is a better selection of aftermarket stocks and parts for the Savage 111 action. Become a paid member so that you have access to the site classified section. This will allow you to sell or trade your magnum bolt head and 300 win. mag. barrel for a new/use take-off barrel and the bolt head you want. After Christmas as members start on their winter Savage build projects, there are usually a lot of new/used Savage factory and aftermarket barrels, stocks and parts for sale in the classified section.

Thanks for the input. I originally did want to rebarrel it but have no tools to do so. I would need to buy the gauges and barrel wrench and a action block along with the barrel.

It's my understanding it is a relatively easy process with the correct tools.

Would putting a short action cartridge in a long action receiver cause feeding issues? I would need s new magazine also.

I bought the tools just an action wrench the gauge for whatever caliber and a barrel nut wrench. It is very easy to change a barrel. The hardest part is breaking the factory barrel nut loose. I think they have a giant angry gorilla at the savage factory that torques the barrel nuts on. From what I have heard it will feed fine with a short action cartridge in a long action. Some people prefer it that way so they can load their bullets long and still. Be able to feed from the magazine.

Ah that is a good point regarding loading the long. I have heard that is the hardest part also haha. That angry gorilla part made me LOL haha. I have a torque wench I have used for an AR build and have a small vise with pads. I'll have to price out the tools again and decided on a caliber to really make a decision. How much does it cost for a membership at this site to posy in the classifieds

See membership tab at top of the page. The $15 bronze team membership will give you access to the classified section. If you already have a small vise to hold the action and recoil lug, the following inexpensive tool set: http://ads.midwayusa.com/product/288...-savage-10-110 will do the trick on the barrel nut. If all else fails on a factory installed barrel nut, a pipe wrench and new barrel nut may be required.

You might also want to check out a E. R. Shaw Savage Pre-fit barrel kit. Cost-effective way to get a good 24" sporter barrel and the tools you need.

Oh okay great thanks for the link and classified information. I was under the impression I needed an action wrench also but if it would work with just the vise that would be great.

I think you will have a problem finding a bolt head to fit the magnum bolt body....Or let me say I'm having a problem finding one!

I have a 111 that was also barreled in 300WM and want to use this action for a 6mmAI build but the bolt body has a indent and the bolt head has to lock into this...

I can't find a bolt head to fit the body unless it is a mag bolt head

Hopefully some of the other members will jump in and point us in the right direction to find a bolt head that will work....

You can get a bolt body from pt&g that will fit your action better and it won't have the indent ,they will have a bolthead to or you can just use the factory one. I like the .700 diameter to tighten up the fit tolerance. If you are using it for hunting you may like a little more clearance. This was only posted as info,I'm not affiliated with PT&G. I have one of there bolt body's and it is strait and works great.
all the savage ones I have looked at have a curve in them when looked at on a surface plate.

Ya the ptg bolt body is around 105 bucks. Too much I want to spend for me right now. My hold body doesnt have that it appears tho. I'll post picture. I may just trade this out for a 30-30 and put a new stock on my axis 30-06 and call it a day.

Fla-940 I just got an idea to try my 30-06 bolt head on my magnetic body and it appeared to fit and function fine.

??? Yours must not of had the dent in the bolt body like mine did....Glad you made yours work!

I did remedied my challenge... I have a 338-06 so I set the head space of my 6mmAI to this bolt so now it has double duty - 338-06 and 6mmAI!
