    Barrel threads??

Anybody know the "factory" length of the barrel threads?

    Re: Barrel threads??

By length I assume you mean the distance from the start of the chamber to where they stop at/near the taper, correct? The two that I have apart right now measure right about 1 9/16 to 1 5/8 (the .243 measures 1.570 and the 7-08 measures 1.605). Of course the last two threads or so are unusable and about the last 5 are covered by the barrel nut where it is relieved on the muzzle end. So when you say "factory length" mine vary slightly from one to the other. Hope this helps you out.

    Re: Barrel threads??

That gives me an idea. The reason I asked is because I had threads cut to a total length of 1.500. When setting up the headspace I had about 2 threads remaining with the factory recoil lug and I had to work to get the nut to turn out enough. That's cutting it pretty close so on the next barrel I have threaded, I'll have the length cut to 1.750 max or aprox 1.725. That way the nut can still cover the threads and I'll be able to use a "machined" recoil lug.
I'am still wondering if there's a "set" measurement of factory threads or are they just cut to "whatever" is long enough??
You would think that they should all be the same if the headspace is set from the bolt head and all the measurements on the actions are the same?? (in theory and small print) ???

You want the "factory " length...or the "correct" length?
The correct length is 1.625" for a standard shank, and 1.450" for a large shank.

So, what's the "factory" length?? What ever fits on any given day??

Since the Savage Guru responded with " the correct lengths" I am taking those measurements to the bank. Thank you Fred!

I have so many thicknesses of recoil lugs these days it is kind of fun measuring threads, using different nuts, both factory and home made. I have a couple of .5 thick recoil lugs that require their own length of thread.
