    Washer woes

I'm a bit embarrassed this is going to be my first post. Hopefully I'll do better in the future.

I picked up an Axis in .308 from a "friend" who knows just enough about taking firearms apart to be dangerous. Stripped everything down to see if there were any problems or "fixes" he might have left me and the small silver "separator" washer that sits between the firing pin and cocking springs in the bolt is gone. I've done a fair amount of searching and can't find any real information on this washer. Is this a standard stainless steel washer I can pick up anywhere or is it specific so I have to order from Savage? Thanks all and I'm already looking forward to using, and hopefully contributing, to the wealth of information on this board.

    Dave

Are you asking about the spring washer that goes between the bolt head baffel and bolt body? See the following article to find out what's missing. http://www.savageshooters.com/conten...y-Instructions. Go to the Savage Arms web site - Store - Partfinder tab and enter your rifle serial number. That will pull up your rifle parts diagram and you can order the part online unless Savage Arms will only sell this part to a gunsmith.

Thanks for the reply JP but I'm talking about the little silver washer that supposed to go on top of the spring as you take the bolt apart. Unfortunately the store is "closed for maintenance". Will have to call. Was just thinking that if it was a plain stainless steel washer used for a bearing surface I might be able to find one locally. By the way, I had looked at the post you linked to and it looks to me like that is the older style bolt with the single spring. Mine is the newer style with two springs. At least I have two springs and from the videos I've watched on Youtube it appears there is a washer.

The purpose of the washer that goes between the two springs, is to keep them from binding together. The washer needs to be hard enough that the spring ends can not dig into it. I make one by finding washer that fits the firing pin without binding, if your lucky & it drops in your good to go, if washer is to large, place on some kind of shaft, so that it can spin, & use bench grinder or belt sander to grind down outside diameter.

Thanks short_round. I was hoping that would be the case as I really didn't want to have to deal with Customer Service over a tiny little washer. Guess it off to the local Fastenal place tomorrow to see what they have.

Update: Went to Ace Hardware since my local one has a good selection of stainless and chrome nuts, bolts, etc. Found two washers that fit the firing pin nearly perfectly and were small enough to fit inside the bolt assembly. However, upon assembling the bolt, I found that it was nearly impossible to cock. I removed the washer (tried both with same issue) and the rifle cocks just fine, at least for a rifle that hasn't had more than 20 rounds through it. I'm making an assumption that the washers I found were too thick. I will bite the bullet and call Customer Service on Monday to order the correct part, which I will measure to verify my assumption. Thanks everyone for the help.

Why not file it or whetstone it thinner? Maybe you are too young to know what kids did to get pop(soda) from vending machines years ago. Lay a penny on concrete, place your shoe over and rub back and forth to make it thin like a dime. Then picked it up and rub the edge on the concrete while rotating it to make it the size of a dime. Back in the old days, a dime bought a bottle of pop in a vending machine. How do I know this? Someone told me about it.

Happened to have my bolt apart for some handle threading action and measured the washer. .38" OD, .27" ID and .056" thick.... Does seem like a bit unusual of a size. Kinda thick for how small the the rest of the dimensions are...
