Question about new savage 10 FCP SR 308 win

Hi guys brand new to the forum and brand new to bolt action shooting. Been a big hand gun guy and have decided to break into the realm of long range rifle shooting. Just purchased a new savage 10 FCP SR in 308 win. Quick question for anyone with more experience out there. Bolt came uninstalled, before installing I noticed there was a small half circle shaped divot on the underside of the extractor. Just wondering if this is suppose to look like this or if the firearm is damaged. The divot is pretty well shaped so I'm thinking it is suppose to be there? If anyone has any experience with this particular firearm id appreciate the feedback. Thanks guys!!!

Thanks bro, yea I just verified with a buddy of mine that has the same gun, he also has the indentation. Now my curiosity has peaked in terms of what the hell the purpose of it is lol.

Rbene223, I'm running a new Vortex Viper 3-9x40 BDC on my AR and like it so much that I'll move it to the 10 FCP-SR that I'm going to be buying shortly. I paid $199 on a Cabela's sale a month or so ago.
You're right in considering Vortex. Can't beat their "no questions asked" lifetime warranty which I did have occasion to use a few years ago.

Nice man, yea I've been eyeing the vortex diamondback 4 - 12 x 40. Retails for around 200 and I've heard great things about it so far. I've always been a handgun guy, have just recently gotten into the long shooting thing so I'm thinking this may make a nice "starter" scope. I'll have to check out the viper as well. Thanks bro!

    Since you asked...

    I'm a Nikon fan.

They can't be beat in this price range (look for a nice Monarch), and their CS is terrific (I've bugged them for extra turret caps and stuff).

And.....it's a shooter! Never managed to get any great groups at 100 yards (maybe 1.5"), there was too much going on between my nephews and 30mph winds and it was moving the **** gun. Also I think it needed a bit of a break in/fouling. Winds calmed down a little and we took her out to 2,3,4 and 500. Bud managed 4 or 5 shots within 4 inches at the 400. We didn't have much ammo or time but I'll report back next time with pictures. 500 yard hits were also very easy. Scope was a Burris Fullfield e1 2-7 he got a deal on a while back, the bullet drops worked well. Seemed to prefer 168gr but will have to confirm.

They have nice glass and great customer service. I don't believe you'll go wrong choosing Vortex.

Have a Savage 10 FCP-SR in 308 myself. Never noticed the spot on the extractor you mentioned, but have not looked. Replaced it with a Sharp Shooter Supply extractor kit then put the factory gear in a box with other removed parts.

Eyewear. Depends on what you want to do I guess. I have a Leupold Mark 4 on my big rifle. Crystal clear out to 500(longest I have available). My temporary scope on the 308 is a Barska, $100 scope. Out to 200 yards, 300 yards not horribly bad but when the sun is shining towards the scope it's a pain to see thru the thing. I'm not a scope guru so I can't explain it but the Leupold did not do this. I've heard good things about Vortex and see a lot of them at the range. Nikon from reading countless reviews seems to be a good deal as well. Personally I like my Leupold, like how it is set up. It is good to see lots of positive comments here towards the Vortex.
