    Imr4451

so ive had a few guys asking me if i tried or what i thought about IMR4451...actually several ppl. i know lonewolf is shooting it in his new 6 creedmoor and is pretty happy with it and since ive had an 8lb jug sitting in my safe for awhile i figured id try it out and post up the results.
now im not concerned about the temp sensitivity nor am i testing for it im just looking at the accuracy side...ive tested a few powders that everyone claims to be extremely temp sensitive and have found that they are not as bad as everyone says they are.

with regards to temp sensitivity and IMR4451 here are two good reads...you be the judge about the temp-sens part....

    http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/...-new-imr-4451/

i was testing some 107g SMKs last weekend and they shot very well so i figured id shoot them with the 4451 because i know they are accurate with H4350 so ill shoot the test exactly the same as last weekend to give me a good idea of accuracy compared to H4350....this is the target with H4350...

i have 28 rounds loaded for this test...6mm creedmoor,107g SMks seated .025 off the lands,CCI200s and charge weights will be #1-40.5g-#2-41g-#3-41.5g-#4-42g...ill post pics later of the target after i shoot the test.

on a side note...i shot a lot of IMR4350 and the first thing i noticed when i opened the 4451 was the different sized kernels...not the it matters but i just found it kinda odd...the other thing i noticed was the 4451 smells like re-loader powders...

and what good would this thread be without some ammo porn....

and just an FYI...ive got 1300 rounds through this barrel now...i know not normal of me but ive been(and still am)just slammed at work....we will have about 25 jobs from this year rolling over into next year...but anyway at 1300 rounds ive lost .038 outta the lands/throat but its still as accurate as day one...i also havent cleaned the barrel in 850(+or- a few)rounds.

so heres the targets from about 20mins ago...i only shot 4 rounds(one of each charge weight)over the chrony..temp was 27deg ammo temp was 41deg...i shot the 4 over the chrony then the 4 3 shot groups on the left...let the barrel cool then shot the 4 3 shot groups on the right....

now the groups...i shot the chrony rounds and the groups on the left with no rear bag which wasnt going so well so i shot the groups on the right off a rear bag to help take me outta the equation and i still managed to pull shot #2 in the first group on the right side(low green dot on the right)..i might shoot this again because at this point id say that while the 4451 seems a bit slower FPS wise its pretty accurate and i think it would be a good substitute for H4350...i will hang on to this data and shoot another test this coming summer as im real curious to see if the difference is even worth worrying about.

I've been getting good accuracy with 4451.
Takes a bit more powder to get speed than H4350.

I'm pretty impressed with it at this point...I'm going to play with it a bit more and may just shoot it in my next barrel.

Yes, 4451 (and all the Enduron line) is a double-base powder, just like the Reloder line. :-)

I was less impressed with it than you when I tried it super-briefly in my Creedmoor (6.5), but it wasn't bad.

MZ5 you say the Enduron line is all double based? ive not read or heard that but i really never even thought that IMR would produce a double base powder so ive never looked into it.....do you happen to have a link?
ive shot a lot of RL-17-RL-22 and a jug of RL-19 and the IMR4451 dont act or shoot like any of those what was you experiences?

never mind MZ5 i found it and thanks for the info/tip...

I've been trying the 4955 for heavy bullets in the Swede and getting good speed and excellent accuracy.

I've never used RL-22 or RL-19 (both Eurenco powders out of their Swedish Bofors facility). I have used quite a bit of the excellent Re-17 offering that Rheinmetall manufactures at their Nitrochemie facility in Switzerland. The Enduron powders are nothing like Re-17, IME, nor does it appear to me that they're anything like Re-26, though I've only just started working with that powder. The Enduron line, from what I've used of it (small amounts of 4166, 4451, and 7977), behaves much like the older-tech single-base powders they are positioned next to (4895 or 4064/Varget, 4350, and H-1000-ish) on the quickness charts. I haven't personally seen any better velocity nor precision from the Enduron stuff, but again I've only used small amounts of it. Claiming that it is less bad for the 'environment' (notice they don't say it's any better for the shooter or his neighbors on the range?) is all very well, but I've no interest in paying more for something that doesn't give me anything tangible on-target.

I agree about paying more for less but it did shoot well enough to peek my interest a little...I'll play around with it more and see what happens.
