Anyone know anything about Boyd's Pro Varmint

I was looking for a new stock for a build that I'm about to start. I was on Boyd's website and found a Pro Varmint for my 110. Anyone know how heavy they are and if they're any good.

The laminates are great, I would not buy a black textured painted one

Guess I should have said hello. I've lurked for while and have learned a lot from guys already.

I'm rebarrelling my 110 .243 to a 6.5 Creedmoor. I've got a Criterion light varmint barrel on the way. Hopefully I can make a decent gun. I'm just hoping for a 600 yard plinker and I think this will be more than enough.

The Boyds site say the Thumbhole Varment weighs 2.8 pounds. My scale says mine weighs 2.856 so I will probably send it back for a lighter one. No wait!

I have 3 in my cabinet. All black texture.

Boyds bull channel fit too tight for me, sanded them out.

I strongly recommend a metal trigger guard, lamp rod pillar bedding, and skim bedding the action.

    Great stock.

I like the .260 also. I was looking at it and the 6.5x47 Lapua.

I was looking at the Pro Varmint that I posted the link and picture of. Not really interested in the thumb hole. But hey, the attempt at humor was worth something.

I've got one for my Savage 6mm BR Norma. Perfectly inletted, arrived in about 10 days, and was on special for $119. It's at least as good as my McMillan which cost me 6 times as much. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat.

Thank you for the response. I think someone owning 3 is a good sign. Maybe the channel will be about right for the light varmint barrel that I have coming.

I guess I better start studying up on pillar bedding. Hopefully I won't screw nothing up.

    Yeah, if it's even a decent barrel you'll get bored at 600 yards. My .223 shooting 68gr Hornady's is a 600-yard plinker.

You're going to have a long-range rifle so find somewhere to shoot 1000+ for when 600 seems like a chip-shot.

The main reason I said 600 yard was I don't have anywhere to shoot 1000. Hopefully I can find somewhere if I get bored at 600 like you said.

I'm so lucky I live very close to places I can shoot extreme distances but it's unfortunate that I'm lazy and shooting is my second hobby behind archery.

I don't go out as often as if like to. When my boy is old enough to go with me things should be easier.

I think you're going to have a great rig. You may just try epoxy-bedding the gun and take it easy on the action screw torque instead of putting pillars in. The Pro-Varmint is a nice stock. I might build up a long-range plinker .223AI throated/twisted for 80/90gr slugs in the future and put it in a coyote-color Pro-Varmint with the optional cheek riser. It'll be a great prairie dog whacker.

And thanks for the responses on the stock. I'm still going back and forth between the Pro Varmint and the Choate Tactical

    Yup.

I've done golf, collected/repaired 60's/70's stereo equipment, was into bass fishing tournaments, Jeep 4x4, model airplanes, you name it.

Mainly just hunting, archery, and shooting now, though. And only enough 4x4 to get me where I'm going.

I have a pile of Boyd's stocks, mostly thumbhole but I do have two pro varmints. I believe at my last count I have 13 total stock including a few on my shotguns... haven't had a single problem yet with any of them. Interestingly enough one of the pro varmints is on a creedmore as well. If you haven't bought the barrel yet I would suggest looking at the ones Rosco has for sale in the classifieds.. and trust me with the combo of that barrel and the Boyd's stock 600 yards will get boring quickly... good luck

I will note that the Boyds I ordered in a Bull channel barely fits the Varmint Contour.

Ok as that is what is in it, but if I put a bull in there I will need to make space on the sides. Not major but slightly annoying

Also get the better depth butt pads. Open cell type if they have them.

I have the 1 inch Limbsaver option on a 7mm mag with muzzle brake and the standard 1/2 inch Boyd's on a .260 with muzzle brake. I felt the sharp whack more on the .260.

Pay for the 1 inch pad...
