    Barrel weight comparison

Do any of you guys know the weight difference between a savage varmint contour vs a palma or heavy palma contour with a nut setup. I am thinking about ordering a barrel 18 to 20 inches long and trying to shave a few pounds from the 26 inch varmint that is on it. As of now the rifle weights 15 lbs and I would like to shave that down to 12 lbs.

Any idea how close i would be with any of these contours?

The Palma contour is only 11 oz lighter than the varmint at the same length. To drop 3 lbs, you'd need to go to a sporter contour.

Not trying to lose three pounds all in the barrel. I will probably have to go to a lighter scope as well. Thanks for the info

You'll reduce weight from around 2 to 2.5 oz per inch removed from barrel length depending on starting contour.

Great. If i could shave say 12 oz by going to 20 inches and 11 oz with a palma contour that would probably feel like a ton and improve balance as well.

I put this rifle together with the idea of it being a tactical match rifle. But for the one or maybe two matches a year i will shoot saving a few pounds to carry it to a coyote stand or deer blind will be nice. Not to mention the short barrel rifles are handy to maneuver.

Just had a thought... i have a shillen varmint contour 6.5x284 with about 800 rounds through it. It still shoots ok but i never use it?

Could this be rechambered to 6.5 creed? It looks like it slowly starts to taper shortly infront of the threads so not sure if it would work. I would think most if not all of the chamber would have to be cut off to get the new chambe to clean up so the threads may end up o tbe taper.

Anyone know if this is possible or know who would work on it?
