New guy, new gun, few questions

    Hello all,

I just picked up am older Savage 110 with a 5 digit serial number. It is a left handed gun and is chambered in 458 Win Mag. I am assuming the barrel is aftermarket as the stock appears to be inlet for it and has been bedded as well. Being new to older Savage rifles, I may be completely wrong. Here is a picture of the maker's mark on the barrel. I have not been able to identify who made the barrel either. I am assuming that it is made for a Unertl-style scope since it is has mount holes so far forward. Any input and clarification would be awesome and I'd like to thank anyone that can help me in advance. I am super excited about this rifle and can't wait to load up some rounds and see how she shoots! Thanks!

I am waiting for Photobucket to sync more pics, so I will add some when that happens.

I did just notice that I put this under modern, feel free to move this if it is in the wrong area. I did not see the separate sections, I apologize.

I am glad you did, beautiful rifle.

Can you put in text what the lettering is on the barrel? Its clear but script looking and I can't make it out

Also it looks like an enlargement half way down the barrel.

and an aside, I got a 1903 from my step dad, it had taps for the fare forward mount for the old A5 scope, has a story but no one knows that it is.

One of the are pretty rifles that has a fair amount of throat wear, it would seem target setup.

Thanks for the compliment. I can't decipher the script, that was part of what I was hoping to get from here. I've asked everyone I know to ask. The enlargement down the barrel is tapped for a scope base, so I assume that is for a Unertl-type scope that needs mounts out that far.

You should go over to shootersforum.com and show your pic to MusgraveMan. He may recognize that name. He knows a lot about nice DG rifles. Give him a try.

Take a piece of printer paper and hold it against the barrel and lightly run the pencil back and forth till the whole script would be covered and it may be legible like that. It probably is a well known name oce you decipher it. Put the picture on accurate shooter, lots of old guys like me over there and someone will recognize the name.
Willing to give back for what the sport has done for me!

I still have not found an answer, but it's not for lack of research. I tried the pencil rubbing and it didn't help much at all. The script is just hard to read. I am considering using some model paint and filling it in so that I can read it more easily.

Dont use paint, just get some kids chalk and rub it in then lightly buff off with a paper towel. It should fill the signature and let you read it but if not take a picture and use a photo editor to enhance it.
