I use any of the heavy-deet stuff like deep woods off.
Also, if it isn't too windy, Thermacells work pretty good for mosquitoes, maybe biting flies, too. Midway has them for $15. They are usually $25
was shooting at the range today, i normally wear shorts when it's hot, but today the flies were terrible biting my leg area and especially my anlkes, so before i rush to the store for insect repellent, looking for suggestions on what is good and what don't work

I have a pair of fishing pants, very light weight that fit over my shorts with an elastic waist band. Keeps sun and mosquitos out but lets air blow though. Water or sweat just makes them cooler. Think I got them at Academy Sports.
this works great for skeeters, maybe for flies.

Holy Crap!!
Next time you wear shorts to the range take some Vick's Vapor Rub place on ankles behind knee's on neck.
Avon skin so soft works for skeeters, don"t know about flies.
"An armed society is a polite society"
"...shall not be infringed" What's the confusion?
And that's why I never wear shorts to the range.
How about hot brass hitting against your calf?
Flies are always going to be an issue for me no matter what I use. Mosquitoes are no problem with Deep Woods Off.
