    Thoughts on 6.5x47 Lapua...

Getting tired of the 308 built on a short action and am leaning towards the Lapua. Good barrel life and less recoil, high bc bullets. Already have a swede on a long action and love it. Any good/bad input appreciated.

Depends on what kind of shooting You want to do? You already have the swede for long range, which is better ballistically. Less recoil? I dropped from My 260Rem to the 6.5 Grendel. I'm limited to 300yds, but the Grendel experts say it is good for Elk out to 500yds, and they are punching paper way over 1,000. It is based on a very accurate and efficient case and bullet. Is the cost of Lapua brass worth it to You? All the rage right now is the 6.5 Creedmore, but there is not enough difference there to make Me jump from the 260Rem. :-)

6.5x47 will not push 140 or the 130 as fast as the 6.5x55swede the 6.5 creedmoor, or the 260. Also, brass will cost more the 6.5x47 vs the 260 costing about $15 more the 6.5x47. However, if you're planning on using a DBM, the 6.5x47 will allow you to seat the bullets out further than the 260 or the creedmoor. Since you already have the swede though, I would look at something different.

I would look at something like a 6mm or a 7mm. You're going to be splitting hairs comparing the swede, the 6.5x47, the 260, or the creedmoor.
They who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

I am getting 2960 fps with Berger AR 130 Hybrids out of my Lapua with a 26" Criterion. It is a laser beam. I compete with it in local PRS matches and it does quite well.

My only caution for the Lapua, is more so with that cartridge, but the same caution.
Take any performance numbers with a large grain of salt. The constant attribute that gets bantered is that Lapua brass is strong enough to out perform it's class. That may be true, but to be fair, you would need to actually know what pressures you are running, and hot-rod an alternative by the same amount. Otherwise it is simply a "my dad can beat-up your dad" argument.

I haven't done a lot of pressure testing with Lapua brass. What I have done shows it to be only slightly "stronger" than most run of the mill stuff. Meaning that "pressure signs" which typically show-up around 70-75,000 psi, would show somewhat above that.
I'm a firm believer in the theory that if it bleeds, I can kill it.

I would suggest a hard look at the .260AI. Much better performance than the 6.5x47, 6.5 Creed or the sweede in a cartridge that will fit and feed from a short action savage just fine. Just as accurate as any listed with the added benefits of an Ackley case and the performance of the 6.5-284.

Barrel and brass life are better on the 6.5 x47 Lapua.
