    110 in 45-90?

    I'm considering re barreling a 110 (long action) to 45-90 or 45-100.

OK, when ya'll stop laughing, would someone help me select the proper bolt head and any other parts I might need to do this?

It's amazing how many crazy thoughts have run barefoot thru my mind, after I stumbled across a 32 inch, .45 cal. heavy octagon barrel, 1:22 twist...

You will have to cone cut the breach end for the extractor to get to the rim, Most likely the bolt head and the extractor will be custom fit magnum. With a .610 -.615 rim I'm not even sure if that can be done. Your looking at less than .050 wall thickness on the bolt head counter bore if my math is right.
The Dunning-Kruger effect is alive and well.

It certainly will be a single shot, as the Savage action does not cycle rimmed cartridges. Sadly

When I first evaluated the barrel, I was thinking in terms of my double set trigger, large ring, Mauser or an 03A3 Springfield. When the 110 fell into my lap, (in .270) I began to contemplate a switch barrel set up. I don't have many applications for the light .270 barrel, (it would cut down into a fine Striker barrel) but I may be able to trade it for a big bore, more to my liking, I do love my thumpers. (41 to .50)

I already have a Handi-rifle in 45-100 and wanted some magazine capacity, mistakenly thinking the 110 could be made to feed 2 or 3 from a magazine.

I will do all the necessary modifications myself, so money is not really an issue, I just don't want to spend a bunch of shop time building a limited "white elephant" .

Are there any other factors I should consider?

Thanks very much for the help,
    Paul

Another option is like I have a 416 Taylor or a 50 Thumper.

Case length would be a big one, depending on how long you seat the bullets. As Robinhood suggested, it might not even fit without a lot of machine work, and thinning either the bolt head or the receiver will weaken it.

Money may be no object, but for that long of a cartridge, it might not be possible. If you have to stick with the LONG cartridge anyway. You can get the same (or more) power from a 458 Win Mag, loaded full or loaded down. Pretty sure that will cycle in the Savage LA. Just won't be a rimmed boomer.

The 110 was never designed to be used with rimmed cartridges, and there are no parts (factory or aftermarket) to facilitate their use in a Savage 110. A few guys over the years have cobbled something up that worked well enough as a single-shot, but you'll never get a large rimmed case to feed from a magazine in a 110. If you absolutely/positively have to have a .45-90 or .45-100 I suggest selling the Savage and buying a rifle more suited to your needs that's actually designed to work with such a round as this idea is akin to trying to shoehorn a Rolls Royce V12 Merlin engine into a Smartcar - it just ain't gonna work brother!

Now if you're willing to abandon those cartridges and go to a non-rimmed cartridge you'll find you have some options that will work with the Savage. Not sure how it ever turned out, but I recall reading about one guy blowing a .284 Winchester out to a straight walled .45 caliber wildcat. Could possibly also look at doing something similar with the Ruger Compact Mag case if you wanted something with a little more umph.

You could build a 458 SOCOM, 47-70 performance levels in standard cases

Blow out the RUM case and have a bolt-action, magazine-fed black powder rifle. I gotta see that.

You mean like these RUMs, no need to go to black powder rifle powder works fine, from left to right.
    My Rum Family 6mm, 257, 6.5, 270, 7mm, 300, 338, 358, 375, 416, 458, 500.

6 Rifles for the 12 barrels, 3 Savages from 6mm to 300 all 30" long, and 3 Rem 700 that are all Remaged from 338 to 500 all 33" long. The 416, 458, and 500 in the pic are 404 Jeffery cases, RUM parent case that had not been formed yet when they are formed they hold 115gr of powder. For a whopping 60 loads per pound of powder.LOL

Thanks, I would post pics of my man cave, but would probably have a Swat team busting down my door 5 min after posting those pics.

Bootsmcguire on this forum made a Striker in 444 Marlin. I have not seen much activity from him in n a while but search for his Striker post and pm him. He made it work.

I wonder how that 6.5 RUM compares to the 6.5-300 Weatherby?

There are a few out there that I have made for others, and they can't believe it can get any better than that, 140gr @ over 4000 fps I have never target shot with mine and neither have they others. But they have brought home some incredible trophy's, from shots that never would have been possible with a Sammi spec chambering.

Actually I shoot the sierra 107gr HPBT out of mine they are light and still have a High BC, I send them screaming over 4500 fps.

I am sorry its not workable, I really like the idea.

Long term I am going to do a 7.5 x 55 Swiss on my 111, very low tech doable but different, still use some of the powders and all the bullets I have for 308 and 06.

I have never seen one in person to compare but wouldn't a 220 slug action be a good host? it appears to be a modified 110 and already has the flat bolt face. some extractor would would be needed as 20 gauge rim diameter is quite a bit larger. just a thought?

I built a 458 win mag on a savage 111 action, one of the old ones with the scope base cast into the receiver. Works very well. I switch barrel it with my 50 thumper barrel.
