Which trigger for my model 116

I have an older model 116 (top bolt release and pre accutrigger) chambered in 270. I want to change the trigger to something a lot better and am undecided on what to get. I've been eyeing the timney triggers as well as the rifle basix. Which should I get? Any other recommendations..

I'm a fan of the Timney trigger. I have installed them on quite a few rifles and currently run them on both of my savages. Easy to install and adjust. Minimum is just 1-1/2#'s. On my last build I bought a nickel plated trigger. I had to tap the pin in place, seems that the plating decreased the hole size just a touch. Otherwise it worked like a charm and spent less than $100 for it.

Where did you find the timney for less than $100?

I swapped out two Rifle Basix SAV-2 triggers in Model 12 BVSS with good success.
I've been happy with 2lb of pull but you can go lower with them. The price is about the $100 range too.
I only needed to file down the upper bolt release slightly on them. They do work great.

There is a blued one on eBay for $90 shipped. The nickels look like they've jumped to $115. Still lower than the rifle basix at $159
If your using it for hunting 1-1/2 to 4# should be perfect for adjustment

Yep it'll be used for hunting. Doubt I would want or need a competition trigger. I'll probably just go ahead and buy the nickel plated timney from ebay.

Timney 631, if I remember correctly the model #

Don't set it below 2lbs because it will not be safe, IMO.

If I can slap the bolt closed with out the trigger skipping the sear, I call that good and safe.

Bouncing the butt of the rifle on the floor is not a good way of testing trigger safety. The least, I get a plastic hammer and and hit the side of the stock besides the trigger with it while it's cocked and see if the sear holds.

If you have the original 3 screw trigger, it can easily and safely be set to 2 lbs. Plenty of information available here and else ware on how to make a lighter spring and safely adjust the pull.
