The short answer to You question is "Yes". Most Savages, short or long action, are "small shank".

But I'm not sure of all of the models that are large shank, and I don't have enough time right now to explain what I do know.

So I will ask that a Brother who does know, please weigh in on this. :-)

I would also be interested as its quite confusing to sort out, seems magnums are now large and the rest not but......

This helps with a quick visual look if the rifle in question is in front of you.

The problem is that you can't tell if a Savage long action rifle is large or small shank before purchase.

I am assuming you are buying online, with a stock photo of the firearm? Not in person, hands on it? Because if you can put your hands on it, you can tell the barrel nut length difference.

You can't go by the caliber. I recently bought a Savage 110 off Gunbroker that was a long action in .243 caliber. In the case of the 110, the long action has a 5+ inches bolt spacing while the short action has a 4+ inch spacing. You find the actual spacing by googling it. I would ask the seller to measure the bolt spacing if you want the long action.

Serial number might helps as well, if it goes back far enough no large shank.

Standard caliber long action or short- small shank
    Some not all magnums large
All target actions ( red blade accu trigger) large.

Serial number no help finding what size, action bolt spacing means nothing for shank size.

Actually, you CAN tell whether it is large or small shank by just looking at the rifle. The LARGE shank models' barrel nut is distinctly SHORTER than small shank models. But, in all practicality, you might assume it is small shank unless it is a 270 WSM or other "WSM" variety or target action or says otherwise. I say that because MOST owners would know enough to say so, unless it was part of an estate sale or something like that. For sure, the large shank models are unusual.

Best way to KNOW for CERTAIN is to ask the seller how long the barrel nut is. (At the moment, I do not know either dimension, but someone here does, and it is in the FAQ section somewhere.)

The thread is informative but I'm looking for a resource to find which rifle and caliber combinations come in Long Action short shank. I am shopping online for a new rifle.

Okay. My next question, then, why (unless you already have large shank barrel you are looking to matchup with a long action) would you go out of your way to find a large shank long action? There is nothing superior abut the large shank models.

Missing the point. I am specifically trying to avoid a large shank long action. But can't get answers from Savage.

So just go ahead and get any long action. It is almost certain to be small shank unless you are told otherwise. If it turns out to be large shank, I might buy it. :)

Seriously, I have never seen one for sale and I am always looking.

Long action large shank's are the RUM, 375 Ruger, and Lapua actions.

Anything else will be a small shank.

On page 1 You mentioned Savage 111 FNCS.

    These come chambered in 25/06Rem, 270Win, 30/06Spf, 300WinMag, & 7mmRemMag.

All are long action(as designated by 111).

    All are "Small Shank"

Large Shank models are made in WSM, RSAUM, RUM, 338LM, Your probably right about the 110BA 300WM?, and Target actions..."I Think!"

I hope I am accurate, and I hope this helps :-)

edit: l'm sure geargrinder is right about the 375Ruger. Oops :-(

The one I've handled was small. Savage never ceases to amaze.

This, and if it's 338 lapua you can count on it being large shank.
