Savage axis bolt stuck

I recently chambered a reloaded round after hearing the coyotes just across the field the other night! I was unable to take a shot and upon returning to the house I tried to eject the live round. I was unsuccessful. It seems to be stuck. Any suggestions on removing would be greatly appreciated. What would cause this?

Was it tight going in? I recently had the great frustration of a scope base screw that was too long locking up my 12FV's bolt.

It was a little tighter than normal, but I havnt had any issues thus far with my hand loads and have shot close to a hundred rounds

Your COAL may be too long and the bullet stuck in the lands.

Robinhood has the likely answer. See if you can tap the bolt open with something like a hammer handle or plastic mallet on the bolt handle. Be prepared for an action full of spilled powder, and you may have to tap the bullet out with a cleaning rod.

Take the safety off to operate the bolt.

I know this is Proly not your issue but thought I'd state the obvious

My mistake then. My 10's etc require it not be on safe

Shoot it, advantage no stuck bullet, no powder in action. If bolt won't move after shooting you can beat on bolt handle, without chance of accidental discharge. Adjust cartridge length not to stick in lands, keep in mind different bullets [brand or weight] have different lengths.

I wondered when someone would suggest this. Since you have no idea exactly what the problem is -- maybe the COL is too long because of a double charge? -- I wouldn't advise this unless you pull the trigger via a string while the rifle is tied to a tree and you are behind cover. A stuck bullet can easily be discharged, spilled powder can easily be cleaned out. A destroyed eye or hand, or a brain damaged by shrapnel-- not so easy to fix.

Hears some food for thought. I have an axis 2 223rem and from day 1 the bolt would get stuck with factory and reloads. sent it back to savage and was told bolt face, main spring housing had to be replaced and my factory rounds were hitting the lands and was told chamber was worked on also. bolt handle lifts but wont unlock to open.

Thanks to everyone that took the time to reply. I ended up taking a rubber mallet and with a couple light taps to the bolt it ejected the round intact.

Good deal. Now I would suggest examining that round closely for irregularities then making up a dummy round or two and seeing if you can diagnose the problem.

any rifling marks on the lead showing it was to long in the chamber? or was the case just not sized right
