Bedding my target action

Ok guys a little advice here. Getting ready to bed my savage target action in a richard's microfit benchrest stock.

I am using pillars and solid bedding with Devcon.

My question are. My understanding is the tang of.the action should be free floated so no bedding there? This action has a solid bottom (no magwell) so my thoughts were to solid bed it from the back of the recoil lug to the front trigger guard screw and nothing past that. Sound about right?

Any advice would be appreciated

yep. If you want some support for a heavy bull barrel, you certainly could bed an inch or so forward of the recoil lug, just be certain that if you do, the front, bottom and sides of the lug are free floated.

I never have seen or had the need for barrel support, so I do just as you said.

your right...this was a B&C A5 i added the third(center)pillar to and bedded..i raised the center pillar aprox .050-.070 higher than the aluminum block so i would have a solid layer of devcon...note no bedding in front of the lug or behind the rear screw...

Tagging in as I am about to bed my Medalist Classic Sporter for my 116 6.5x284. Too many rounds went down the barrel fighting the Accustock.
If I may butt it once, LongRange, How did you dam up near the front trigger guard screw? Also, when I tighten down the action screws in the Medalist, the trigger pulls over to the right and touches the trigger guard frame. I was thinking up wrapping layers of tape around the trigger and bed with the trigger assembly on the action to keep trigger centered in the trigger guard. That's why I ask about the dam near the trigger.
Is there an easier or better way of doing this?

Yes...buy 3-4" long action screws cut the heads off then you wrap the screws with tape(electrical tape works best)about a 1/4" down on the treads so the screws fit snug in the screw holes in the stock then you add your bedding to the stock and slide the action and barrel with the long screws into the stock.

i use model clay or plumbers puddy and fill the trigger area with it.

Thanks Longrange, how do you bind the action and stock together. How do you know when the action is seated in the stock sufficiently?

Set the action into the bedding and let it set a few minutes and the bedding will start to ooz out...clean it up as it does...after a few minutes wrap the action near the back first with electrical tape nice and snug then the front cleaning up the bedding as you go...let it set a few more minute then hang it upside down and check and clean every few minutes until the bedding stops oozing out then check every 20-30 minutes and clean up as needed...after and hour or two it will stop oozing.
