    Caliber change questions.

Hey guys. I just got a .270 axis for a super cheap price. Well I personally dislike the .270 due to the size and cost of ammo.. I already have a "long range" axis built in .308. I would like to go down to a .223 based mainly off ammo cost possibly even 7.62x39 as iv always wanted a compact bolt action in that caliber. I know all the axis rifles are technically long actions and I'm guessing the barrel, bolt head, stock, and mag will all need replaced.. what else might I be missing? And I guess more importantly are these all parts that are obtainable at a reasonable price?

I'm building a 7.62x39 on a 16 short action currently with an X-Caliber barrel and the barrel is going to be the hardest to find most expensive part of what you're wanting(Jim at Apache Gun Works is making mine and he can do one with a Green Mountain blank) the 308 magazine and bolt head should work you might have to bend the feed lips a little and the bolt head will need a Sharp Shooter Supply extractor kit.
Other than that you should be just fine

Do you have a rough estimate of what the barrel, bolt head, and extractor kit is going to run you?

Barrel would be a little over $220, extractor kit is around $25 and you will just have to contact SSS because they don't list it and find a bolt head used here or I believe they are around $40 new

That's not too bad. I would really like to see your finished product when you complete it. Also maybe some groups! Iv always wanted a x39 in bolt action just seems like a great cartridge for a 16" or 18" threaded setup

Barrel should be shipped within my next couple of days and my stock is looking nice. I'm going to notch where the ejection port is a little and on the other side I'm going to take some height away from the top of the stock so you can see the milling on the action better

Did you do full length barrel or compact?

I went with a 20 because I did not want a full length barrel and I read somewhere that 20 inches is where the x39 stops gaining velocity

Makes sense. Gotta get the most outta that caliber. It's not a inherently accurate round to begin with so every little bit helps I'm sure.

That's where you are wrong it is an accurate round bit most x39 guns are just **** for accuracy

Well I'm excited to see your results. If you are in 1" at 100 I'm sold and my x39 build will begin!
