My 10 project

A while back I posted a thread about my Axis project. This is my latest endeavor. I posted some about this in the Barrels section. 10 action, 4.27 screw spacing, internal blind magazine, E.R. Shaw barrel, Boyd's stock, bedded with JB Weld. The scope is a sight mark triple duty 4-16 with a standard MilDot. Got it grouping fairly well, using 4064, but not quite where I want it yet. Still a work in progress.

Great Rifle, and nice shooting! If you don't mind sharing, what projectiles/charge weight are you shooting with 4064?

I'm just starting to dabble in 4064. I'm getting five shot groups around the same, out of a 700p. I'm using the tmk 175, around 2.865 oal. Velocity from my 26" is 2685 with 43.0 gr. I just loaded up more trying 44.5 @2.855. Hoping to get about 2750 out of them.

SD was 10.9, so it's showing promise. Hopefully will get out to try them out next week.

I have 20 in Savage 10FCP-SR(1-10 twist) 308 I recently got a pretty good group, ~ .8 in (4 shot group, note im still a new shooter) with 43 grain of 4064 also [175 smk ~2619 fps w' 10.3 S-D ]. Looking to do further testing sometime soon to see if I could duplicate results.

I'm using 175 SMK's also. I haven't chrono'd these loads. The headspace is tight and I think even with these loads i'm getting pretty high pressures. The primers are still flattening and cratering just a bit. With more powder the bolt was very sticky. I think the rifle will shoot a bit tighter. I am going to load the next at 41.7 gr. and play a bit with seating depth. I am at 2.9" now. I will probably back off five thousandths or so. I will post when I make significant progress.

Sure I can do that. I've got the next three days off, hopefully the weather will cooperate and I can get out to test the new loads. I'll get some pictures of 100 and 300 yrd targets. I'm using a magnetospeed v3 so the readings are pretty darned accurate. I loaded up a bunch due to accuracy of 43gr, will send you a note with it in the excel format. I'll do several different sets.

We got snow flurries today, mainly from the wind, so if it blows out of here I should be able to test.

So we had Maine weather today, yesterday's snow flurries moved out and we had sun and wind, from 9 to 3 on the range, gusts to about 12mph. I scrubbed the rifle down and went out with the misses. It was an interesting day to say the least.

I'll post chrono data then explain.

44.5 grain IMR 4064, Lapua brass neck sized, br2 primers, 175 TMK set to 2.855".

I cheated and used a digital scale only for these loads, they looked good, shot in two five shot sets. They looked great except for the one min reading, probably my error throwing charges. Average was 2768.

Next series:
Min 2746
Max 2789
SD 10.7
ES 43.

Same thing, one low charge, avg was 2769. I'll take the heat for that.

Having said that, shot twice to foul, then five shots, called the flyer, it really ticked me off as it screwed up a 1/4 moa group. I shifted the rifle on my shoulder and it sent a round before I was 100% set. Opened up to .9 or so.

After that, each five round group opened up as I fired, with the last being above 1moa. I'll take pictures later on.

Still took it to 300 yards, looked like a shot gun hit the target. Approximately 2moa. Still shaking my head about it. Going to dissect the rifle and see if I can find any problems, and load up some 178 Amax's and try a ladder test I guess. I'll use my mechanical scale this time.

You mention Boyd's stock. Looks like a pro varmint, but in wood. Special order? If not, what stock is it? Did you have to re-channel for the heavy barrel?

I started in the lower right, then moved clockwise. Upper right was last group, then I took the magnetospeed off and did a bit of tracking and playing with my scope in the middle. It kept opening up.

The stock is a Boyds Pro Varmint, with a bull barrel channel.

I thought the pro varmint only came with the black textured paint? Was that a special order? Looks nice!

Also, that is a straight bull barrel and not a varmint taper?

The barrel is a Shaw varmint weight barrel. It has a slight taper to it. It is a Savage Varmint profile. The stock comes from Boyd's as a laminate. When you select your stock, just choose which laminate style you want, or you can get it with textured black paint.

OK, back to the range I went. I had loaded 41.7 grains of 4064. What? Because last time I got the best performance from 41.6 and 41.8 grains, both right at half an inch. Seemed like the obvious thing to do. I also backed off the seating depth to 2.895, which is still touching the lands. So how did it go?

Take a look. First three rounds downrange were looking pretty good. I was thinking, "Well, I might have found the formula here..." The fourth was a dud, bad primer. Tried it twice to make sure it wasn't just a light strike. What would have been round number five flew from the group.

First round from my second group seemed to like the same place the last round went, so I got to thinking, "Maybe it was a cold clean bore and now it is a warm slightly fouled bore..." I got two rounds one right on top of the other. Then... three rounds went rogue!

Groups three and four were tried with a CCI primer instead of a Federal. I wast just seeing what would happen. Something did happen...

OK, I am done with the CBC/Magtech brass for good. I'll keep it for war stock but never use it again for attempted match loads. The brass is just too thick and pressures are higher than with other brands of brass. Even at 41.7 grains of powder, the bolt was sticky most of the time. My next loads are going to be with the same powder charge and some Federal brass I have already processed. Maybe I'll just do a ladder shoot to see where those lovely nodes are.

The saga continues. I feel like Odysseus trying to get home.

One more thing to add. This is a pic of the Dud round. Can you see the mark at the ogive? I can chamber and un-chamber a loaded round without a problem, so I think I have the CAOL about right. I could still back off a few thousandths more if I need to to get it dialed in. (Thank you Wife for taking the pics!)
