Savage Mark II GL stock to action fit?

i just took out my older left handed savage Mark II out of the safe because i was wondering if i could slide a dollar between the barrel and the stock.... no chance, i believe my barrel is totally touching the stock the full length, is that normal for a savage rimfire rife? i also checked my new unfired Axis .308 and the dollar bill slides between no problem. on the mark II there is no pillar or spacer in the (single) action screw, so when i tighten the action to the stock it just pulls right into the stock and bottoms out everywhere. Thanks

I've got a wooden-stocked GL and I sanded the inside of the forearm until I could slide a dollar under it. I then applied some sealer on the sanded wood. Seemed to improve accuracy.
