Add another savage to the safe...

Like many here I succumbed to temptation and pick up a model 12 fv in 22-250 from Cabela's last night. With the rebate going on it's hard to resist. Didn't have an extra scope, so I pulled the Mueller APV 4.5-14 off my .22lr and headed out for a little range time this morning. I'm pretty impressed with it so far.

Shooting was done at 100 yds with front and rear bags on a homemade portable bench, that's became a little rickety over the years, and factory ammo.

Seemed to like Hornady 45gr and 55gr v-max the best. Not horrible with Winchester 45gr jhp. Did not like any kind of soft point I put through it.

    5 shot 55gr v-max

    3 shot 45gr v-max

    5 shot Winchester 45gr jhp

All in all, I'm pretty happy with it. Especially when my skill on the trigger is average at best.

If anyone was looking at the 12 fv and having doubts, get one. You won't regret it. For $319.99 after the rebate, you can't beat them.

I'm hoping to be set up for handloading by the end of the year. I have several rifles that show potential to be real shooters.

I picked up a 12 FV in 22-250 as well. The only spare scope I had at the time was an Osprey 10 x 40, so I put that on. I was very impressed with how it shot straight out of the box.

I would suggest for that price that everybody pick one up.

Mine likes 55gr Nosler Ballistic Tips and 34.5gr of IMR4064.

Nice! You can't argue with the price or the groups!

Looks like a steal if a deal. I want one!

Put a good stock on it and it would look like this

I probably will swap stocks on it eventually, but the factory one isn't as bad as some others I've had. It's a little flimsy in the forend. However, I did shoot it off bags and bi-pod and it doesn't touch the barrel. Think I'll slap a coat or two of paint on it this weekend and shoot it as is for now.

Well I got her painted yesterday. 3 coats of krylon fusion khaki, a little webbing and 3 coats of krylon matte clear. It turned out pretty good. I like it!

Made it back out to "the range", dad's house, with some different ammo. This gun flat out shoots with Hornady Superformance 50gr.
Pretty sure I pulled the first one, the second two fell right in place.

Excellent paint job! And it groups great with those 55s...you must be thrilled! Who said you need to spend $3K for a precision shooting rifle? Uh, they're obviously wrong.

Cool paint job, I've been wanting to try that! You used rattle cans I take it with the Krylon? Nice.

Very nice! The contrast of the light stock looks great. Thinking about a GS for my 114. Which McMillan color is that?

Thank you, though it's not a McMillan. It's the factory 12fv stock that I painted. I sanded and degreased the stock. Put on several base coats of Krylon Khaki and Krylon black marbelizing spray, then four coats of Krylon matte clear.

Please disregard the above posts from me. Just rereading this thread and realized which post Savage was referring to.
