    Pre 67 action questions

So, I unknowingly bought a pre 67 action with a mcgowen barrel on with only 4 rounds down it, which is why I bought the gun. The guy said he had a friend help him install the barrel. The barrel has not had any machine work done to it and the bolt looks like it is original. From what I read you have to change stuff to make it capable of swapping prefit barrels.

My question is what all is needed to be changed on this pre 67 action to make it work with pre fit barrels? After doing some research I am now glad I tore the gun apart right away instead of shooting it.

I attached some pictures of the original barrel and the bolt.

    Any help is appreciated
    Thanks,
    Michael

Buy a newer non-recessed bolt from Midway or Brownells, or the classifieds here, and you're on your way to barrel swapping heaven.

All of my other LA bolts have a small dove tail that slides in the action. The pre 67 action does not have that, do you machine that off a new bolt?

It's an anti-bind feature that Savage used to help guide the bolthead through the raceway.

If you get a new bolt for the pre-67 that has the rail, you can just grind it off.

Before you go hog wild, there is a little more to it than just changing the bolt head. The cross pin hole in the bolt head is 90 degrees off from current manufacture. This means you need a bolt head, a bolt body, a cocking piece pin and a firing pin assembly.

Yeah, I am in contact with PTG about making a modern bolt head with the pin hole rotated 90 degrees for this bolt body.
