Best way to find out is compare the numbers. Here's a fantastic site, http://stevespages.com/page8d.htm. Look up each cartridge and make sure the 284 is larger or the same at base, shoulder, length, etc.

Sounds like You want to buy a run of the mill barrel & chamber it with a match reamer. I don't think that would equal out to match results?

ER Shaw offers barrels in 284Win, 280Rem, & 280AI. I think they will still chamber to almost anything if You provide the reamer?

Their crome molly drop in barrels are $180, & their SS are $255. I believe My Shaw barrels are of good enough quality that a Match shooter/reloader could win matches with them.

It will take at least 4 months to get a barrel from them, and if You provide a reamer, they will have it and Your money for the entire time. Just the way it is with barrels now days.

My BIL shoots 1,000yd competition, and to be competitive, he buys top of the line blanks and has them spun and chambered by the best smiths He cam find. He says, "You get what You Pay for". And believe Me, He Pays! Just ask My sister. Today's Her birthday. I wonder what She'll get of equal value?

Bottom line, Match=Money. Other wise, ER Shaw suits me just fine. Good Luck...Jim :-)

I've considered the options you're considering for a elk/mule deer gun and I'm almost sold on a 28 Nosler, too. .284Win or 6.5x.284 was my first inclination but for a long range deer/elk rifle why not have the extra horsepower.

I figure Nosler will probably have brass made for a long time no matter if the cartridge is popular or not. But it seems to be gaining some traction with the long-range guys so maybe it'll eventually be relatively popular.

    What are you building from?

For $50 more you could get a premium barrel. Douglas, Shilen, CBI, McGowen, parcnor, and several more that I can't think of off the top of my head. I would look at that route.
They who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

yes plus you'll need a rum magazine and a magnum firing pin as it's smaller. be prepared for that barrel to get smokin hot after a few rounds!

Noslers site says it feeds from 7-300win length mags also this rifles hunting rig not a paper puncher so varmint contour is not needed
