I bought a 12 the other day that was small shank I had assumed they were all large shank. It was the cheaper grade Model 12, an FV I believe.

Thanks guys for all the discussion, hope we all learn more from this thread, I have looked on the savage site several times and see the same thing, only some specify target, and in that case I wonder what the difference is between the 12 action and the 12 target action is? Not finished with my first build yet, already shopping for my next one, this stuff is addictive, but I really like it so far.

Most 12 series are small shank varmint models using the same action as the 10, 11, 14 and 16 models. They were/are heavy barrel rifles. These are not the same as the 12 series that based on the Target Action. The PTA was later in life and because of the target/heavy barrel set up they classed them under the 12 moniker.
    More shooting, less typing.

I want to build a .284 win. Due to single shot , can I use a 12 target action?

The Dunning-Kruger effect is alive and well.
