you guys that are shooting a model 112 long action shot box .308 winchester this is for you. how are your rifles shooting? i just bought one and out of a three round group the first two will touch and the last one is a flyer. what kind of groups are you getting. i have not done anything to the gun yet execpt for a little trigger work. stock trigger pulling right at 5 pounds.
Check your barrel channel, sounds like the barrel is touching somewhere. Slide a dollar under and along the barrel. That will let you know where it's touching. Mark it at the offending point, remove the action and sand the channel using a wood dowel or anything else round that fits until the barrel no longer touches along the length of the channel.

thanks, have check that already. its not touching up to the barrel nut. i am lost on this one. the gun is tight along with the scope and mounts and rings.
Did you check the clearance with it sitting in the bags like when you are firing it ? Or are you using a bipod. Either could put pressure upwards. Sometimes it can seem free if holding the gun, but change in other positions.
did check it when laying in rest. can run paper up to the nut. did have to shave a few places from the stock when i got it but now its floating, still not shooting like a savage should. does have a yankee hill Flash Hider / Compensator.
Check to make sure the tang is not touching.
where would the tang be?
the tang is the rear of the action, where the safety is.
so the tang should not be touching the stock?
Yes the tang should be free floating.
Basically everything from rear action screw back should
have slight clearance.
The factory recoil lug is a stamped affair. They can be off by as much as .009" from being flat. You may have some portion of the rear of the channel touching or lifting the recoil lug. Relieving this area and bedding may eliminate your problem.........in addition to insuring the tang is indeed floated.

If you are shooting 3 quick shots out of a thin sporter wgt barrel it could be caused by the barrel heating up. Try letting it cool between shots and see what happens. It just might be something that simple.

it a heavy barrel. i am going over the stock that was painted befor i bought the gun and there is not alot of room between the stock and the receiver. think i will sand the stock down some and see what happens.
