    New to me Mod. 1899

Bought today a Model 1899 in .303 Savage. Has a nice checkered forearm and stock, buttplate is the steel rifle style. Front sight is a Marbles #52 while the rear sight is also Marbles. Metal finish is pretty thin all over with rust on the buttplate. The barrel comes in at 25 inches measured to the front of the receiver. The stock has cracks along the sides adjacent to the receiver tang. Serial number is 45.290 which seems to put it's date of birth in 1905. The bore is just OK but I still need to clean it. I think it's a neat specimen.

Nice rifle. If they could only talk, just think of the amount of history that old girl has seen.

The sights have been changed but the barrel is correct, you have to add another 1" for the threads of the barrel in the receiver so it's a 26" barrel which is correct for the model.

Not sure on the checkering, you should get that gun lettered. I've never seen that pattern before so I'm guessing it isn't factory but who knows what a factory letter might say. If it is factory checkering it was a special order gun.
    Savage- "never say never".

I have one quite similar 1911 in .303 and someone butchered the butt staock by adding a dove tailed high cheek and you guessed it , it was drilled by an idiot for a scope. I am going to have mine welded and reblued by Turnbull restorations and find a butt for it . The bore is mint.
Willing to give back for what the sport has done for me!
