Savage 110 Long Range Build Update

I had previously written a budget of $1000 dollars to build a long range weapon off of my model 110 I already own chambered in 30-06. Due to me investing money in getting a small business started I will not have the funds for extras till next fall/summer. I am completely new to the long range world for I have just been an avid hunter and bow shooter my whole life. But I decided waiting a whole year before I could even begin to progress my skills as a shooter was not an option.

Previous issues with shooting this gun, the thing flat out wasn't fun to shoot more than about 5 rounds in the prone position due to the kick. The scope is the same junk that came on it. The gun shot very solid groupings however. So I decided to this.

I pulled the rear butt pad off, I mixed up a small bit of bondo and poured in, I then started adding lead car wheel weights into the bondo, I repeated this till the butt stock was full. I will be putting a new butt pad on it. I then removed the action and barrel and stuck as many lead wheel weights in the bottom of the four arm as I could and then added bondo. The result, much heavier gun, perfectly balanced as well. The stock now feels extremely rigid as well. Did however make one mistake. I filled in the spot where the recoil lug slides down

I scraped it out just fine, no problem now but made me nervous for a min. But for 8 dollars of bondo and an hour and a half of my time. I think I did great. No It's not something I would take to a national shooting match, but I will defiantely be able to practice much more with more enjoyment.

Next step, I'm going to spend the time and money to bed this stock.

I am also going to order these parts.
Swfa fixed 10 or fixed 12 scope.
A good 20moa base to make my action more rigid. Suggestions on brand?
Quality scope rings, also open to suggestions.

End goal, 1000yd steel hits. I'm not sure with this set up that I will be able to accomplish this, but I'm going to start shooting as often as I can and shoot on windy days to learn how to shoot in the wind, I don't have access to anything over 300 yds, but will make the trips once I decide I think have it figured out enough to give some 600-800 yd shots a try.

Not sure a scope base would do much action stiffening, but I wouldn't be worried about stiffening it anyway.
Id just get a standard EGW 20 minit base. There are lots of decent rings to choose from, but the ones with inserts
like the Burris signatures will give some flexability for moving the scope for windage or even more elevation without
using the internal scope adjustments.

If you go for a SWFA SS 10 / 12 or 16x you don't need an x MOA rail

The scope has 150 MOA and you will only need around 38 MOA - for 309 at least - to reach out to 1000 yards

10 or 12x is enough out to 1000 yards

Finally the USMC snipers also use a 10 x Leupold so that should work

I am getting a SWFA SS 16x in a few weeks for my 338 Lapua

SWFA will have a sale on their scopes starting April 15 😉

I think I am going to opt for the 12x, same build quality? Nothing worse on the 12 than what the 10 has? And if I got out behond 1000 I will probably opt for a scope with more zoom and different build. Also, is this a for sure sale? And what's the price difference?

Results are awesome, had 5 different groups less than .5 MOA at 100 yds, didn't have time to go further. New scope and base coming soon, I'm still debating on the whole steel rings and steel base, I agree on steel base, but is a steel rings really a big issues? It's getting mounted to a aluminum scope?

Sounds like you are well on your way! Good shooting. Recoil does hamper shooting time, for me anyway. I do most of my shooting with lighter recoiling rifles, once you start flinching its game over. How much difference did adding the weight make in the recoil? The 30-06 will have ample power to clang steel at 1k, with less recoil and less expense to reload. Of course I say that but on my 1st build I bought a 30-06 and rebarreled it to 280AI lol. Anxious to see how your build comes along.
