    Bent bolt body

Just wondering if a slight bow (.008) in the bolt body would harm anything or if the floating bolt head would take it up. The bow is in the center. No idea how it got bent , it was used when I bought it. Thanks , Jim

Bottom of bolt was wearing off the finish , so I checked it with a straight edge and feeler gauge. I was wondering if this would affect the accuracy. Thanks for the reply ,Jim

Given the floating bolt head design, I'd say .008" should be fine and not harm accuracy. It may make the bolt lift a bit heavier though due to the added friction.

I was thinking the same thing . So I guess I can't blame my bad shooting on that. Just thought I would get some other opinions on it. thanks , Jim

I wouldn't think it would cause any issues, or atleast I have never heard of it before. I would suspect normal manufacturing tollerances.

That bolt body was born with the defect, caused by heat treatment. It is also out of spec. The print calls for concentric within .004" T.I.R.

Sharpshooter , do you think that the bow in the bolt is hurting the accuracy . If so can it be repaired or do I have to replace it? Thanks , Jim

I don't think this would necessarily hurt accuracy, as the floating head would compensate for the error in the bolt body.

However, if you're worried about it, i would go ahead and buy a new one.

I sometimes think a lot of people believe the floating bolt head is the key for accuracy. Savage owners are about the only ones that attribute accuracy to the floating bolt. Chambering, barrel straightness and concentricity are other factors. American Rifle company took the best of all great actions to create the Mausingfield. The Floating bolt head was not in the finished product.

OP; find another bolt body or straighten that one.
The Dunning-Kruger effect is alive and well.

You will never get that one straightened, they are case hardened inside and out. Just get a new one.
