CBI 28" bull barrel in 260 Rem

    Good afternoon all
i ordered the barrel today to replace my 10FB 308 win that I have now which nothing wrong with it but for the past year I been saving for 260 rem.
Jim is great guy a lot good tips I ordered the barrel and nut from him.
I am open for advise from any off you who have the same barrel on starting load data, performance speed to expect and if happy with barrel?
i am thinking of starting with 143 ELD X and H4350 I have some H4831sc also.
    your advise always appreciated.

    Thanks

Load data for that bullet may be limited as it is new. I run 42.5 gr H4350 with a 142 smk .010 off the lands. This is with lapua brass/cci br2 out of a 26" CBI 260 rem barrel. I'd expect your velocities would be slightly better with the 28" tube

    2835 fps

Thanks hafejd30 that's sound very promising I wanted the 26" one but he was out.
man looks like I will gai at least 250 FPS over my 308 win. Also I am the kind like accuracy over speed
did you notice any pressure signs?
One thing to add how is the accuracy of your barrel?

This is my load data, but again not the bullet your using

142 smk .010 off the lands
    Lapua case: trimmed to 2.025"
    CCI BR2 primer
    42.5 gr H4350

I ran up to 43.5 gr. Started seeing minor pressure signs there (primer flattening mainly)- these were running 2930 fps. These round were only showing a spread of 4 fps but printed the worst group. .81 moa at 300 yards

I found accuracy node at 42.5 and 43.2. This was .020" off the lands. I then tested both at .015" and .010 off lands.

    3 shot groups- 300 yards
42.5 .010 off- .37" (.12 moa) Avg 2835 fp- this was the best

    Others were:
    42.5 at .015" off- .59 moa
    43.2 at .010" off- .59 moa
    43.2 at .015" off- .92 moa

I then tested loads at .010 off: 300 yards
    42.5- .49 moa
    42.7- .56 moa
    42.9- .43 moa
    43.1- .63 moa

I then tested 42.5 and 42.9 at 600 yards in 5 shot groups:
    42.5 .010" off- 2.67" (.44 moa)
    42.9 .010" off- 3.85" (.64 moa) with 4 rounds into 1.46" (.24 moa)
The 42.9 after several tests would give me random flyovers where 42.5 would always average under 1/2 moa.

My findings are bullets like Sierra 140 smk with a secant ogive like to be further off lands-.015-.020"
142 smk like .010- this proved the same for 300 smk in my lapua. They have a gradual shoulder (tangent ogive)
Most Hornady have a secant ogive with a shoulder. These like to be .020ish off

These are my results with these rounds. Yours will vary

Thank you again hafejd30 great details, well I might have to go with the 142 SMK then.
i agree the SMK they don't mind the jump that's all what I used in my 308 175 SMK tell i tried the 175 TSMK and also the 240 SMK in my RUM they did real well also.
Your barrel shows great accuracy I am glade I went with CBI. Which i think they are branched of Krieger barrels and usually that's what I use on my custom builds, I have a model 12 large shank 7 wsm with Krieger barrel shots the 180 gr JLK like laser ( it is switch barrel with Savage factory 300 wsm) and the same the 300 RUM has Kriger on it but REM Action which I have to part with for a shooter who refused to go home without it at one shoot, both were my own build I mean I cut the chambers did the threading and the crowns etc. Cannot do that any more my last move I have to part with my lathe and mill.

CBI was a button rifle division of Krieger. It is independent now from my understanding

Ok the barrel came in today just as NSS promised initial inspection all look good inside out I hope it will shoot as good as it look.
install it on the action using brownlls thread lube which I have for years had to stir it very good I used slight coat of it on both mating surface of the recoil lug
I used 308 win Go gauge and for the No go I added 1 lyer of scotch tape on it so that would 0.002" bolt won't close.
all what need is the Lapua brass to arrive so funny the UPS truck dropped the barrel but he did not leave the 260 bras and my STI tactical 5.0 bothe need signature. I called UPS to ask if the driver can come after 4:00 pm but no luck they won't help or arrange that.
sad thing about when I was young in gollege I worked for UPS for 3 years and we use to bend backword to help our customers now all that is gone. Maybe that's why every body going FED X.

I will keep posting I hop I can shoot it this SAT

One more thing you guys think it is good to bed the 3 inches forward of the recoil lug due to heavy barrel?

    Thanks

Don't bed forward of the lug. Keep barrel completely free floated. I ran same barrel and size for years but in 308. Never had an issue

Ok made to the range today so far fired 18 rounds during break in and speed checks. I ended up using HORN 140 gr ELD M. I did not find any 142 SMK locally at Cabelas.
At 100 yard the worst group was 1". The best was just under .5" but I was shocked the speed is not there, also I was loading my rounds to max COL to fit my CDI AI mag which force me to be at .060" off.
The under .5" group was pushed with 42.5 H4350 and Fed 210 GM. Speed of 4 shoots was 2726, 2721, 2728 and 2739 yes would been nice if that's last one was 2729 but I looked twice to confirm and it was correct.
No signs or indication of pressure at all, so I am going to increase the charge by .3 gr 3 shoot each and try agian.

Any one tested the IMR 4064 in 260 rem with in the 140 gr range?
Also any opnion on 130 gr TSMK? I noticed when i did the calculations on JBM it won't hold as good as the 140 gr at longer than 1300 or 1400 yard If i am not mistaking.

I hope if I shoot the barrel more it pick some speed.

Id be looking for the best accuracy and not be worrying about the extreme range aspect.
What you have in the 260 is akin to having a Ford f150 pickup truck. Very good and very popular
for what it is and is capable of. But if your needs are hauling 1.5 ton loads then buy a Ford f350 or bigger
and not try to fill the bill with a truck not designed for the job. Same goes for cartridges and is the
reason larger ones exist. Certainly you can shoot your 260 to any distance you desire.
But dont count on being happy with the results compared to bigger cartridges with heavier bullets.

Where did you get this information. I had heard this before but many people have stated that it was a BS rumor. Curious to know the truth.

    Update: Found this on Krieger's web site;

There is sometimes confusion about whether Krieger Barrels does button rifling, because in 1999, another barrel company was started under our roof, Criterion Barrels, which manufactures button rifled barrels for the O.E.M. market. These barrels have never been available for sale by Krieger Barrels, and were always kept as a separate company from the beginning, both to reduce confusion and because the process to make them is very different. Criterion has since moved to a different production facility and continues to be friends and producers of high quality button barrels. You can always be assured that when you order a Krieger Barrel, you are getting a precision, match-grade, single-point cut-rifled Krieger Barrel.
The Dunning-Kruger effect is alive and well.

I went with 45.2g of H4831sc in a lapua brass slinging a 140gr berger hybrid. Work up to this load.
They who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

Found on the homepage of CBI website. It's still listed there as being a division of kreiger in the past but now has its own facility/ownership etc. Just checked and it's still on their page

I agree CBI is part or use to be in bed with Krieger that's the main reason I went with them even Do Shelen (also the have good reputation) not far from where I live.

The good news I was in the range at the crack of down today and tested my new loads found a workable one at 44.3 h4350 under .5" and the speed was 2866, 2861 and 2860 no indications of pressure at all I think I will play with seating depth to fine tune and see what happen.
funny it was gusting in the 10 to 15 knots no efect at all but also I was shooting at 100 yard so no big deal.
i think I am good to go almost
Psharon97 I heard a lot of good things about the 140 gr B hybrid I might give them a test with the 142 SMK and the JLK if you ever heard of the before ( i use JLk in my 7 WSM great performace have to make custom reamer from PTG for them) just to see what happened at past 1000 yard
so far CBI is good barrel I hope it will stay that way
