    6.5 Creedmore- 140gr ELD-X

Rounds fired from the rifle in this thread

Went to the range today with 40 rounds of the new Hornady 140gr ELD's. Pretty happy with the performance, here are a few groups.

The 2 shot three shot groups were .53 and .57 and the four shot group was a .67. Not to bad for factory ammo with a hack behind the gun. Honestly, I am not a very good shot and I would imagine someone with better skills could easily produce a higher level of accuracy.

More interestingly, I had a chance to use the Magneto Speed for 7 shots. The AVG out of a 20' inch barrel with a break was 2721 fps, ES 41 and the SD was 16. A friend I shoot with had a 26'' X-Caliber shooting the same rounds and his 12 shot AVG was 2821, exactly 100 FPS faster. Didn't feel we did enough testing to absolutely confirm, but from these preliminary results I only lost 100 FPS with 6'' of barrel. Not bad!!

The ballistic tables show the rifle staying Supersonic till around 1030 yards.

nice shooting...ill have to admit im not a fan of hornady but they do produce so great ammo. also the test was good and shows that barrel length does make a difference...sure a shorty will get it done and has its place no doubt about that but at longer distances in ANY kind of wind that 100fps IS going to matter.

Were they the 140 ELD-M or 143 ELD X? Factory loaded ammo?

It was the 140 ELD M not the X. I can't remember anything these days.

Thanks, what surprised me the most FPS rate drop. Seems most the interweb gun aficionados usually claim a loss of about 35-50FPS per inch of barrel which is what I was expecting, however the reality was only 16.6 fps. Both barrels are new for the most part with 140 down the tube on mine and about 200 on his so I would expect them to perhaps speed up even a little bit more as time went on.

Usually it's around 25 fps that is quoted and it's close but it also depends on powder and caliber. If handloading he could get more of a spread than 100fps with the longer barrel. I run 26-28" barrels on my Creedmoors. I like to have some extra speed and a few inches of barrel isn't getting in the way.

Went out today myself with the 140 ELD-M factory loading. 2825fps average from my 27" barrel. Here are a 100 and 300 yard target. I am very happy with the accuracy and velocity.

Plan on running these rounds out of my Mega Maten 6.5 Creed build. Good to see that velocity didn't suffer too much out of the shorter barrel, it looks like 20" + suppressor is the ticket.

Nice shooting Rosco! Now post up some more pics of that fine rifle shooting these groups

I'll have the remainder of my A-Max Creedmoor ammo too, so you can do some side-by-side comparisons.

Given the depth of talent out there, I know I'm still very much at the shallow end of the pool. My last trip down to Kentucky marks only the fourth time I've shot out past 200, and we still didn't get much past 300 that day. Still, it's a darn good time every time, and every pull of the trigger teaches me something new.
