budget 270 build

i purchased a 110 package 270 from a pawn shop barrel was bad so i ordered a new one from numrich heavy sporter found a crazy deal stock from boyds and put it together rifle shot better than i can now i want to bed & pillar i have read on this site about using lamp rods for pillars do these work well since they are in compression or would i be better to make pillars out of 1/8 npt pipe ? i did this gun as a learning tool for my 280 build and have had some fun putting together this 270 and shooting it can see why barrel nuts are fun thanks for advise on pillars (as soon as i can learn howto post pictures i will of this build

Personally I would install real pillers.If you use lamp rod and decide to sell the gun to get something different,it would be a detraction on the price.It is better to make it look professional.You can get pillars cheap at stockys or midway,like 12.00 You can get a kit with the correct drill and epoxy for around 20.00.Take your time and make it look and work real nice.Working on guns is not a race,they may look simple but you can do more harm than good going the frugle route. I saw Axis 270's on sale for $250 at two different places this week. One place had a 243 there as well. I used all my will power to not buy one.

McMaster-Carr have Alum. spacers. Order what you need, I get 1/2 inch with a .252 hole and 1 1/4 or 1 3/8 long. I face them off in my drill press and cut grooves with a file, again in the drill press.. Use a 5/8 Forstner bit to drill hole in stock.

Sorry if this is hijacking......but, I am waiting on a new heavy sporter barrel to be delivered from Numrich as well. Mine is also in .270 and is stainless. How is yours shooting?
