Savage made a deal with Chief Lame Deer for use of his likeness on the company logo and the tribe would get a deep discount on rifles
A quick google search and this is better than the one they picked - glad I purchased my Savages before the change - found the previous logo respectful of Aurthur Savage.

Actually they lasted quite a long time. The average family owned business rarly makes it past the third or at most fourth generation.
Books have been written about it. Remember the W T Grant co, F W Woolworth, Large department stores like Wanamakers in Philly, and the list goes on and on.
Savage hasn't been "family owned" since the early 1900's. Author Savage sold his interest in the company in 1905 and moved to California where he dabbled in a great number of different business ventures (oranges, tires, mining, oil, etc.) until he committed suicide in 1938.

Getting back to the OP, why would Savage want to use the old Atlanta Braves logo?
