Which type of scope mount? The original Savage one piece can hold a 1 inch diameter scope with max turret size of 1 inch. The weaver will allow up to two turret size in a one scope. The B Square will allow any ring and turret size combo.

Roger you are good then for most hunting scopes. Just watch the size and height of the front bell

Do you think a 40mm would fit?

No, the weaver only allows tube of one inch but the rings are far enough apart that turret size does not matter. There maybe larger rings available for the weaver mount but you will need to contact weaver as I am not aware of any. Your mount is named the #1 Side Mount.

B Square 340 mount is design to fit the 4 existing holes. It has the longest rail and sits the highest on the gun. It will fit any set of weaver rings. You should be able to get a big honkin scope on it.

Here's something in the cool factor.

It's a Boone scope 2.25X mounted on my old 340 and the mount fits the peep sight holes.

That is cool. Here in Canada those mounts are impossible to find.
