    .22 zero range?

I friend of mine who is a new shooter purchased a .22 rifle with a 3x9 power scope. He wants me to zero it in for him but I am wondering what range do most people zero a .22 in at? I've read most people zero at 25 or 50 yards. Also what can he expect his max range to be for target shooting? I don't have much experience with .22LR

Both are correct it depends on how you plan on using it

I zero for 50, at 100 I think it drops about 6 inches. I have been successful on nutria out to 175 yards with my Nikon BDC scope helping me out.

I zero at 100 because if I shoot at 50 I'm only a couple inches off but zerod at 50 shooting at 100 I'm over 6 inches off..

This is why a BDC is so handy with a 22lr!

Just so I understand. If you zero at 50 yards your rifle shoots 6" low at 100 and if you zero at 100 yards it only shoots 2" high at 50 yards?

This sounds about right from my experience, I've never bothered to measure.

If you have an android or iPhone there's a few few free ballistic calculator apps...I'm using the one by federal cause its the only one I found that has 22 mag options..anyway..very handy for these kind of situations..

If he's target shooting as you suggest, zero at whatever distance he will be shooting. If he wants to shoot at various and "max" distances, then he needs to learn how to use his scope.

I zero my Savage FV-SR at 60 yards, but also shoot at 100, 200 and 300 yards. There is no magic zero. You just just need to know what your zero is, understand ballistics and know your scope. "Max" distance is dictated by the amount of scope adjustment available and if you have a canted scope base, typically 20 or 30moa.

For general pinking where the shooter just wants to yank on the trigger and have no idea how to use a scope, 50 yards is fine,

    good luck...

I zero at 100 with my mkII fvsr with a mil dot scope. running your ammo on a ballistic calculator definately helps you understand your drop. For this guy I would do 50 or 75.

I run a sample load in Point Blank. Using a BC of .20, 40gr (I have no idea what the little pills have for a BC, so I guessed) and a velocity of 1100fps, it shows with a 75yd zero, .94" high at 25yds, 1.48" high at 50yds, and zero'd at 75yds, and 3.59" low at 100yds.

With a 50yds zero, same bullet info, it is .20" high at 25, and dead on at 50, and 2.22" LOW at 75, and 6.55" LOW at 100. Pick your distance. Unless you or he, are never going to shoot beyond 25 yds I would not zero for that range. The drops occurs too fast to keep up with, without adjustable turrets.
