What's the best way to trim a soft rubber Savage buttplate to fit a new stock?

I only had a hand held belt sander, so I set it up in my vice and held the stock up to it. I put a layer of tape on the wood and when the sander started hitting the tape, I backed off. Took about 10 minutes to do mine with 80 grit, but it was not very thick.

Stick it in the freezer for a day or two, then sand or file to a nice smooth finish.
