New member looking for 1st action

Looking to build my first tactical rifle and Savage actions keeps coming up. Can an Axis action be used, or would I be better off finding a 10 action? Caliber would be 6.5 Creedmoor in a short action 308 bolt face.

Yes axis actions can be used. Or you could check the classifieds there are several actions for sale.

Ok. It seems that aftermarket stocks are pretty limited for the Axis though, correct?

Can't see any posts in the classifieds section.

If you want to see the classifieds section, you have to purchase a subscription.

That explains it then. I'm trying to get some pricing to see if I can build a Savage for cheaper than I can buy a Ruger Precision Rifle.

The Remington actions are pretty much out because the expense of a gunsmith to barrel them will make the project over budget.

you can install a rem barrel with a nut.

I have no idea why. Ever 700 action I've ever seen has a standard threaded barrel. I didn't know it could be done.

If you don't mind, the answer is yes, but with conditions.
If you want to really make a sweet rifle then versus a probably discounted off MSRP Precision Rifle, probably not.
You'll need, IMO, barrel, trigger, recoil lug, stock, gauges, tools(unless you can borrow someones) and lord knows how many odd and ends.
The upside of it is once you get the stuff, you can do more of them, and more, and more.....whoops, excuse me.
In my opinion, if it is just one and done, buy the Ruger. If you're considering doing more of them, or you like weird chamberings like I do, then it's hard to beat the versatility of the Savage platform.

I'm thinking 6.5 Creedmoor for this rifle. Not too oddball of a caliber.

Nope, not oddball at all. Pretty main line as a matter of fact. That's why I posted what I did.

your going to be hard pressed to beat the RP if your looking to build/buy an accurate tactical rifle...all the RP needs is ammo and a scope.

Looks like I can pick up a new 700 action with bolt and Mark x trigger for $320.
